Beef Jerky Recall: 15,388 Pounds of Beef Jerky Found to Have an Undeclared Allergen

If you’re gearing up for a summer road trip, you might want to double-check your bag of snacks. Springville Meat & Cold Storage Co. recalled 15,388 pounds of its beef jerky and beef snack sticks. These products contain anchovies, but none of the labels indicated fish as an ingredient. As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from eating the beef jerky. Here’s everything we know so far about the recall.
What caused the recall?
During routine inspections, the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered that the particular Worcestershire sauce used in this beef jerky recipe contained anchovies. The labels for these jerky products did not indicate that fish or anchovy was an ingredient. It’s a big deal since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all of nine major allergens be indicated on food labels.
For people with allergies, consuming products that contain these allergens can cause serious or life-threatening medical consequences. That’s why the meat processing company has recalled all of the beef jerky and beef sticks. The company has also recalled its venison, elk and buffalo jerky products just to be safe.
What stores sold the beef jerky?
There are no specific retailers or geographic locations listed on the recall. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is still investigating which stores sold the jerky. So, when the retailers have been identified, you will be able to find them posted on the USDA’s recall page.
How do I know if I have a recalled beef jerky?
Springville Meat & Cold Storage Co., Inc., makes a lot of jerky products, and this recall affects anything made between May 30, 2023 and May 30, 2025. All of the labels will have “EST. 20528” in the USDA mark of inspection on the package. To see photos of all of the labels of these products, you can visit the USDA announcement here. If you frequently purchase beef jerky products, look through the entire list of recalled products, and double-check your pantry for these items that have the same labels and lot codes.
What should I do next?
If you have any of these beef jerky products and have an anchovy allergy, do not consume them. You can throw the jerky out, or bring it back to the place you purchased them for a refund. If you have consumed the jerky and feel ill, please seek medical attention.
