She had to switch up her morning routine from espresso to something gentler for her stomach.

Giada De Laurentiis Has This for Breakfast Every Single Morning

Giada De Laurentiis has become pretty much synonymous with Italian cuisine. Her twists on classic dishes and easy weeknight meals are mainstays in so many kitchens. But the Everyday Italian host shocked me when she told me she no longer drinks espresso in the morning! What could be more Italian than a daily double shot?
I recently spoke to Giada over the phone about her new partnership with Peroni beer. We talked about all things Peroni, of course, and she shared that she even uses the beer to make a perfectly crispy pizza crust! She also told me about the unique way she uses up leftover Easter chocolate, which is actually pretty genius. Then I asked her about her morning routine, which is when she dropped the espresso truth bomb.
What does Giada De Laurentiis eat for breakfast every day?
“I start my day with a cup of chicken broth with a scoop of collagen,” she said. “I know that sounds strange, but it really works for me. I used to start my day with a double espresso and I realized in my 50s that my stomach wasn’t loving that habit after all these years.”
While it is shocking, it totally makes sense. Coffee is pretty acidic, and can be hard on the stomach. Giada said she loved the habit of drinking something warm first thing in the morning, though, which is why she switched to broth. But she doesn’t stop there.
“After that, I will have either buckwheat cereal or oatmeal, and both of them would be savory with olive oil.” I remember when Giada posted about her olive oil oatmeal on Instagram, and people were pretty surprised to see a savory version of the breakfast staple. But oats are a great neutral base, ready to be dressed up however you want!
And lest you think that any travel might change up her morning routine, that isn’t the case. “If I’m on the road, then I’ll just go get an oatmeal from Starbucks and I make it work,” she said. As someone who cannot keep to a routine while traveling, this is the kind of discipline I admire!
