I Tried a McDonald’s Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich, and It Did Not Go According to Plan

Sometimes TikTok has brilliant food ideas, like the famous feta pasta. But other times, TikTok tells people to make a hash brown McFlurry sandwich, which is what brings us all here today.
As one of America’s preeminent fast-food critics, it’s my job to test hacks, no matter how ridiculous they seem. In the best-case scenario, the public eye is opened to something surprising and delightful. In a scenario like this, I spend several days jumping through hoops to save you from a similar fate.
What is a hash brown McFlurry sandwich?
It’s two hash browns with the contents of an Oreo McFlurry smooshed between them. I would never have thought to put these two McDonald’s menu items together, not because the combination sounds unappealing but because the items are on two entirely separate menus.

The hash brown McFlurry sandwich appears to have been brought to life by @arvanfamily in Australia. In America, McDonald’s stops serving hash browns (and the rest of the breakfast menu) promptly at 11 a.m. McFlurry service, on the other hand, theoretically could begin at 11:01 a.m. if the ice cream machine cooperates. Of course, this did not happen.
I visited three McDonald’s on three different days, and each time, it all went wrong. On my first attempt, I missed breakfast by mere minutes. This hack exists on a razor’s edge, where timing is imperative. It normally takes me 11 minutes to walk to my nearest McDonald’s, but alas, it had snowed the night before, adding an additional three minutes to my commute, dashing my hash brown dreams.
The next day, I arrived 10 minutes early. I awkwardly lurked in a booth until breakfast ended, my hash browns growing colder, limper and sadder by the second. When the clock struck 11:01, I was told the McFlurry machine wouldn’t be up and running until noon. If a “hack” requires an hour and 10 minutes of waiting to execute, it’s not a good hack. However, I was testing this TikTok trick not for myself, but for the greater good, so I persisted.
On the third day, I decided to walk to yet another McDonald’s in hopes that it would be more accommodating of people who need McFlurries before noon. Sadly, at 11:01 a.m., I was notified that the ice cream machine wasn’t working at all.
At this point, a lesser fast-food critic would have phoned it in, but I take my duty to the American public seriously. I stuffed my cold McDonald’s hash browns into my bag, bought a tub of vanilla ice cream and a package of Oreos at the supermarket, and headed back home to make the darn thing myself.
Is the McFlurry sandwich good?
It wasn’t. Believe me, after all the hoops I had to jump through to bring this Frankenfood into the world, I was desperate to find a silver lining to make it all worthwhile. But truly, entirely and unequivocally, this was not good.
When I got home, the hash browns had saturated the paper bag with cooking oil and left slicks of grease all over my laptop, wallet and makeup bag. I blotted the hash browns with paper towels before sticking them into the air fryer to re-crisp. Fresh or not, McDonald’s hash browns aren’t sturdy enough to support any sort of sandwich, falling apart into bits the moment you take a bite.
Maybe a McFlurry sandwich would work with a McGriddles bun, but I don’t have the patience to try such a stunt, and neither should you. If you want to make an ice cream sandwich with a McFlurry, use McDonald’s cookies instead. If you want to taste some potato in your dessert, dip your fries in a Frosty.
