Pier 1 Is Going Out of Business and Will Close All Its Stores

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has put a strain on local businesses and national chains alike. Everything from theaters to shopping centers has been impacted as people sheltered in place, staying home rather than going out.

Unfortunately, some businesses haven’t been able to weather the storm. Neiman-Marcus and J.C. Penney both filed for bankruptcy, and now, an old standby for home goods and housewares (we’ve always loved their kitchen items) has fallen.

It’s tragic, but true—we’ll soon be saying goodbye to Pier 1 stores.

Why Is Pier 1 Closing?

Pier 1 filed for bankruptcy early on in 2020. It also tried and failed to find a buyer for the business. Because of COVID-19, the chain will be closing all stores still remaining in the United States—not half of their stores, as was announced earlier in 2020.

How to Shop at Pier 1

Select Pier 1 stores reopened on May 22 for going-out-of-business sales. You can no longer return items purchased before September 1, 2020; same thing goes for gift cards or store credit—anything from the old Pier 1 is no good.

Here’s the good news: Pier 1 has relaunched as an online retailer. That’s right! You can find deals on chic furniture, lighting and decor at the new Pier 1 website right now.
