]]>Neither did the people who blew up a TikTok video with this hack. So before you reach for the white stuff the next time you cook, stop to learn about this little-known trick. Morton’s Salt’s “secret” feature isn’t actually a secret, but it’s a detail you may have overlooked, despite how often you reach for the package with the iconic rainy-day logo.
You’ve probably had Morton’s salt in your kitchen since you were a kid, but did you ever really look at the package? More specifically, the hack has to do with the metal spout you pour salt out of.
You’re wondering, what sparked this revelation? Well, TikTok creator @trip82city recently baffled scrollers with a video of Morton Salt’s “secret” feature. Take a look at the video below:
@trip82city♬ original sound – [email protected]
The video, which has garnered over one million likes and 13 million views, shows someone holding a 26-ounce canister of Morton’s Salt with the top sticker completely removed. When lifted completely off, there are two holes in the spout, roughly the size of salt shaker holes. Baffling viewers, the person in the video closes the spout, turns the canister of Morton’s upside down and proceeds to shake salt out of the container.
Voilà, a hidden salt shaker is built into your Morton’s, and you never knew it. The stream of salt looks as gentle as the amount you’d get from a table salt shaker, so you can stop pouring large amounts of salt into your palm unless necessary.

]]>The post Some Gerber Infant Formulas Were Just Recalled—Here’s What We Know appeared first on Taste Recipes.
]]>Here’s what to know about the Gerber infant formula recall of March 2023.
On March 17, 2023, Perrigo Company issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of its Gerber infant formula distributed in the United States, specifically the Gerber Good Start SoothePro Powdered Infant Formula. The potentially affected formula lots were manufactured at Perrigo Company’s Gateway Eau Claire, Wisconsin, facility from Jan. 2, 2023, to Jan. 18, 2023.
According to the official recall report on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (USDA) website, Perrigo recalled its Gerber Good Start SoothePro Formula out of an “an abundance of caution due to the potential presence of Cronobacter sakazakii.” Per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Cronobacter sakazakii is “a germ found naturally in the environment” which can thrive in dry foods, such as powdered infant formula or in “contaminated feeding items like breast pump equipment.” Cronobacter infections are notably dangerous for babies born prematurely, those younger than two months and those with weakened immune systems.
So what happens if your baby is exposed to Cronobacter? According to a recall report from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), “These bacteria can cause diarrhea and urinary tract infections in people of all ages and can be very serious in infants.”
Although the FDA states Cronobacter infections typically cause no symptoms, the infection may cause poor or disrupted feeding, low energy, fever, excessive crying or other serious symptoms in at-risk infants. The CDC’s Cronobacter information page also reports that the germ can even cause death in infants susceptible to the infection. Per the NCDHHS, if your child exhibits any of the above symptoms, you should seek medical care immediately.
Gerber’s Good Start SoothePro Formula is sold at retailers nationwide, so the recall isn’t contained to a specific region. Therefore, if you purchased any of the potentially affected Gerber infant formula after March 5, 2023, you should check the bottom of the package for its Lot Code and “use by” date.
The following lot codes are being recalled:
You are in the clear if your infant formula doesn’t match any of the above lot codes. However, if you have a formula matching the recalled items, see below for your next steps.
Perrigo notes in its report that, so far, none of its distributed products have “tested positive for the presence of this bacteria” and as of publication, “no adverse events have been reported.” Furthermore, none of its other products at the affected facility or other facilities are affected by the Good Start recall.
If your Gerber Good Start SoothePro infant formula matches one of the affected lot codes, you should discontinue using the formula and dispose of it right away. You may request a refund for an impacted product by contacting the 24-hour phone line for the Gerber Parent Resource Center at 1-800-777-7690. You may also contact the Resource Center for more information about the recall but make sure you direct any health-related questions to your child’s healthcare provider.
This isn’t the first recall of its kind. In 2022, Abbott recalled its baby formula after receiving reports of Cronobacter and Salmonella infections. Make sure you keep up to date with your baby’s food brands!

]]>The post I Tried This Viral Salt Hack to Save My Nonstick Pan—Here’s What Happened appeared first on Taste Recipes.
]]>But what happens when a nonstick pan gets scratched and loses its nonstick powers? It can be hard to know when to throw away nonstick pans, but if yours isn’t too beat up, you might want to try this TikTok hack that shows you how to restore a nonstick pan.
TikTok creator Sophie Louise (@s_lou92), who posts helpful cleaning hacks, shared a little-known salt hack for fixing nonstick pans on the popular video platform. As of publication, the video has garnered over five million views and over 600,000 likes on TikTok. Louise began the clip by explaining a quick trick to solve a nonstick pan’s sticking habit. “All you need to do is get some Fairy liquid and a soft sponge—never use a scourer—give it a wash and dry it up,” Louise said. “Fairy liquid” refers to a dish soap brand, so your go-to dish soap will do.

After you’ve cleaned your pan, rinse and dry it off. Once it’s dry, place the pan on the stove and let it sit for a minute or so on high heat to get it hot (Louise says it should get “very, very hot” before you put the salt in). Once it’s ready, pour enough table salt to cover the bottom of the frying pan and shake it, so the salt is evenly distributed. Let the salt cook in the pan for a couple of minutes until it gets golden brown. Louise describes the color as “a bit like brown sugar.” Once the color looks right, you can dump the salt into the sink—Louise notes it can be a helpful cleaning method for some sinks—or the trash. Next, take a damp paper towel and wipe the pan out. Be careful if the pan is still hot to avoid any unpleasant burns.
Now that you’ve completed the hack, you’re ready to cook something. In the TikTok video, Louise cooks an egg with some oil in the pan to demonstrate that the pan, which “used to stick,” doesn’t any longer.
I had a nonstick pan with scratches that no longer worked well. Before trying this hack, I avoided using the pan for frying eggs or food that was more likely to stick, such as fish or burger patties. To begin, I washed and dried my pan as the clip instructed. I was pretty skeptical that some hot table salt would do anything, but I went in with an open mind and heated my skillet. I turned my burner on high and waited a few minutes for the pan to heat. I knew it would be hot to the touch by sprinkling a few water droplets into the pan and watching them quickly sizzle.
I poured a very generous amount of salt into the bottom of my pan and shook the pan until the salt looked even. As Louise mentioned in the video, it takes a few minutes of cooking for the salt to turn a golden brown. Once it was unmistakably the color of light brown sugar, I removed the pan from the heat and disposed of the salt. I didn’t want to wait for the pan to cool off, so I used a thick wad of paper towels to wipe it out, but you may want to let your pan sit a few minutes before you do this step.
Eggs used to be the worst food to cook in this pan, so I put a small amount of butter (about a teaspoon or two) into the pan and cracked an egg to test it out. My initial expectation was that the egg would still stick to the pan. It didn’t slide around while cooking and looked stationary. However, I could easily lift it out of the pan once it was done cooking.
The same day, to test it out again, I cooked three burger patties (one Beyond Meat and two turkey patties) in the pan. There was no doubt about it—the table salt hack worked! My pan was a pain to cook with; now it does its job. While I’m not going to say that the pan works perfectly every time, it is better than before and appears to have improved.
I don’t believe that the salt hack for fixing nonstick pans will work for every stubborn nonstick pan out there, but if yours has mild to moderate scratches, give it a try and see if it helps!

]]>Limes are an expensive commodity, but their popularity hasn’t slowed down. U.S. per capita consumption of fresh citrus fruits (including limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, temples, tangerines and tangelos) was about 26.21 pounds in 2021.
Despite its popularity, most people don’t know how to cut a lime to get more juice from the fruit. It turns out that simply cutting one in half isn’t the easiest way to extract all the juice. So, the next time you pick up one of the green fruits, try this method to retrieve the most juice out of the citrus.

]]>While turkey may seem like the star of the meal—and it can be with Ina Garten’s turkey hack—dessert can also be the stand-out dish of your Thanksgiving feast. If you need some dessert inspiration, Ina Garten (aka the Barefoot Contessa) recently shared her favorite Thanksgiving desserts in preparation for the holiday.
Ina Garten isn’t just the queen of everyday cooking. She’s also the queen of sharing the best Thanksgiving recipes. The Barefoot Contessa has been sharing her favorite dessert recipes on Instagram each day leading up to Thanksgiving.
Here’s what the beloved cook has unveiled so far:
Ina Garten’s first dessert pick is a twist on a classic pecan pie. “Is it already Thanksgiving next week?!! Yikes! This week, I’m posting a favorite Thanksgiving dessert each day, starting with the Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie from my new cookbook Go-To Dinners,” the cook captioned the post.
According to her description, her spin on a bourbon chocolate pecan pie calls for a store-bought pie crust, so you don’t have to worry about making your own. The recipe doesn’t call for any unusual ingredients, either. Her version calls for brown and granulated sugar, salt, unsalted butter, eggs, pecans, unsweetened chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Oh, and good bourbon.
If you’re looking for a perfect sweet treat, then check out these Ina Garten’s outrageous brownies.
If you like apple-based desserts, Ina Garten’s Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp might be your new Thanksgiving go-to. She suggests you “assemble it early in the day and pop it in the oven before guests arrive,” per her Instagram post. Imagine your guests walking into a house that smells like baked apples.
Garten’s recipe calls for McIntosh or Macoun apples, but when we tried the recipe out for ourselves, we found that it worked with Honeycrisp apples, too.
If you’re looking for a store-bought apple dessert option, one of Ina’s favorites is Trader Joe’s french apple tart.
Everyone loves a good pumpkin pie, but Ina Garten puts a fun twist on those warm pumpkin spice flavors with an unexpected, easy dessert. Her parfaits layer fluffy pumpkin mousse, crumbled ginger cookies and whipped cream.
Dessert parfaits look pretty on your table and can save you time on Thanksgiving day. We like to add a little extra crunch to ours by adding chopped pecans, like in this recipe for Pumpkin Crunch Parfaits.
In her Instagram post on Nov. 17, Ina Garten called her Pumpkin Roulade with Ginger Buttercream “a show-stopper” and we see why. The cake’s filling is packed with crystallized ginger and mascarpone cheese. Yum!
Roulades, or pumpkin cake rolls, are yet another dessert you can make ahead of Thanksgiving and store in the fridge. You’ll want to take it out and let it return to room temperature before serving.
The Contessa labels this recipe as “advanced,” so make sure you’re OK with a more complicated bake. Before you give it a go, read through our Test Kitchen’s tips for how to make the perfect cake roll without any cracks or breakage!
Another bourbon-infused recipe, Ina shared her love for Applesauce Cake with Bourbon Raisins. Apple cakes are easy enough for beginner bakers to master this Thanksgiving. Her recipe is packed with all of our favorite fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. We’re inspired to skip the pie this year and give this cake a go. And once one of the Barefoot Contessa’s favorites is made, make sure to serve it with Ina Garten’s cake serving hack.
