While the Gilmore girls aren’t exactly known for spending a lot of time in the kitchen, these Gilmore Girls coffee cake cookies from Mallory Jones Oniki still give major Lorelai and Rory vibes. It’s clear why they were the inspiration for the recipe!

For starters, we know these Stars Hollow natives would approve of the layers of sweet indulgence these cookies offer (cinnamon cookies are topped with streusel and ribbons of icing). They are perfect dunking cookies with the mom-and-daughter duo’s signature drink—coffee, coffee, coffee! And they absolutely smell like an East Coast fall while baking. We think even Emily Gilmore might allow these to be served for dessert at a Friday night dinner. Or at the very least, at a tailgate party, provided they were sitting on doily-lined plates. Ready to whip up a batch of your own? We’ve got the goods below!

Gilmore Girls Coffee Cake Cookies

@thepalatablelife sept 1 🤝🏼 gilmore girls rewatch #coffeecakecookie #gilmoregirls ♬ Where You Lead I Will Follow – Carole King

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2-1/2 cups flour

Streusel topping:

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Icing:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Splash of vanilla

Directions

Step 1: Make the dough

Preheat the oven to 350°F, then combine butter, oil and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. Mix until smooth and fluffy, then add the egg and vanilla, and mix again. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until combined.

Step 2: Make the streusel

Combine butter, brown sugar, 1/3 cup of the flour, cinnamon and salt in a bowl and mix with a fork, pastry cutter or your hand. The mixture should stick together, but also crumble when you run it through your fingers. If the dough is still a bit sticky, add one tablespoon of flour at a time until you get a crumbly consistency.

Step 3: Prep cookies on baking sheet

Using a large cookie scoop, scoop 12 balls of dough onto a lined baking sheet. (You can make smaller scoops for more cookies if you like.) Make a good-sized indent on the top of each ball of dough with the back of your cookie scoop, sprinkling a couple tablespoons of the streusel inside. Bake the cookies at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes.

Step 4: Make the icing

While the cookies are baking, combine the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla in a small bowl and whisk until it’s smooth and drips easily from a spoon. Once the cookies have cooled slightly, drizzle on lots of icing.

Here’s What I Thought

First thing that popped into my head when I took a bite: These cookies taste exactly like coffee cake. Like, exactly. The two tablespoons of cinnamon in the dough is working some serious magic, the streusel adds the perfect little crunch, and the icing drizzles are absolutely the cherry on top of an already-delicious cookie. I would definitely recommend—actually, I’m going to go so far as to insist—that you whip up a batch for a Gilmore Girls binge session. It’s a truly delightful way to immerse yourself in the cozy season. And of you need more Stars Hollow-inspired recipes, there’s a whole cookbook based on the TV show.

We Tried TikTok’s Dr Pepper Brownies https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/dr-pepper-brownies/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/dr-pepper-brownies/#respond Mon, 28 Aug 2023 18:44:17 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1911975 Find out how to make Dr Pepper brownies and, more importantly, why you MUST.

The post We Tried TikTok’s Dr Pepper Brownies appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Dr Pepper in brownies? Yes, apparently! Word has it on TikTok that adding just 1/4 cup of Dr Pepper to any brownie recipe makes them, simply put, super duper delicious. We were intrigued—if not a little skeptical—to find out if that was true. And if so, how? We set out to discover just that by giving it a try.

How to Make Dr Pepper Brownies

Step 1: Make the brownie batter

Use your favorite brownie mix brand or from-scratch brownie recipe, and follow the directions as-is.

Step 2: Stir the Dr Pepper into the batter

After the batter has been made, stir in 1/4 cup of Dr Pepper and bake. That’s it!

My Thoughts on Dr Pepper Brownies

I genuinely didn’t know what to expect with these brownies. I mean, how could 1/4 cup of Dr Pepper possibly alter the taste of a whole batch of brownies in a noticeable way? Well, after a few bites, I changed my tune. These brownies are the chewiest and just perfectly moist. Simply put, they’re the most delicious brownies I’ve ever made.

The Dr Pepper seemed to make the brownies extra moist (and very difficult to overbake, which is a big perk). It also added some richness that made them irresistible. I could not stop eating them, and I even employed a couple of other taste testers who agreed this was a great way to make boxed brownies taste better.

So, could it have been a coincidence that this just happened to be the best batch of brownies I’ve ever made? I suppose. Would I be willing to chance it on my next batch and skip the Dr Pepper? Absolutely not. I’m officially team Dr Pepper.

After this success, I might have to try other recipes with soda like Dr Pepper pot roast, Coca-Cola cake, Dr Pepper pulled pork, Dr Pepper ribs or even mulled Dr Pepper.

How to Make the Viral (and Simple!) When it’s hot outside, we can never have too many ways to cool down. Especially when it comes to frozen desserts that take mere minutes to make and only call for a couple ingredients! So when TikTok creator @littlefatboyfrankie introduced us to fruit shaved ice in a video that has since gone viral, we welcomed this gorgeous, delicious and simple frozen delight with open arms.

How to Make Real Fruit Shaved Ice

It really couldn’t be easier! Simply freeze chunks of fruit overnight, and then use a Microplane to create the shaved ice effect. If you don’t have a Microplane at home, use a box grater or even the grater attachment for your food processor.

For the best results, take a tip from @blairhorton and make the chunks of fruit on the bigger side so you have something to hold onto as you grate. And work quickly—those smaller shavings will melt if left sitting for too long!

@blairhorton VIRAL PINEAPPLE SHAVED ICE is definitely worth the try! @littlefatboyfrankie made strawberry shaved ice a viral sensation and I had to try it with pineapple. Because I love pineapple, but also because I was nervous about micro planing a smaller fruit 😝😝 As a texture girlie I can tell you that this 1000% hits the spot! Plus it’s truly the easiest thing to make! @littlefatboyfrankie topped his with condensed milk, so I tried it with condensed coconut milk, but it honestly didn’t need it all. Let me know if you try this and what you think! #viraldessert #viralrecipe #viralrecipes #shavedice ♬ original sound – Blair Horton

Once you have the perfect mound of deliciousness, get creative with your toppings. @littlefatboyfrankie topped his strawberry shaved ice with a drizzle of condensed milk. Want a 100% vegan treat? Use coconut condensed milk like @blairhorton. Lots of easy ways to dress up this dessert. Toasted almonds, shredded coconut and mini chocolate chips sound pretty delicious, too.

The Best Fruit for Shaved Ice

Generally speaking, any fruit that can be chopped into larger chunks is best. You’ll want to have something that starts big enough that you can keep your fingertips a safe distance from the shredding. Be sure to choose the biggest strawberries in the bunch! Other fruits that would shave up beautifully are bananas, cantaloupe, mango or pineapple. Or possibly a combo of two or three? Our favorite part about this recipe is all the different flavor possibilities!

Premium roast Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

13. Premium Roast Coffee

While this is definitely a lighter-bodied coffee, I proclaim this drip option on the McDonald’s coffee menu to be a very dependable fast-food coffee. I always need cream and sugar with drip coffee, but I feel like I could drink this black just because it has such an even flavor.

Who will love it: People who prefer light-bodied flavors
Who should skip it: Anyone who’s used to dark roasts

Americano Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

12. Americano

With a more robust flavor and a nice, sweet edge, I preferred the Americano over the premium roast. That said, it’s still a very light punch of espresso, but it gets the job done.

Who will love it: People looking for a little more umph than the premium roast has to offer
Who should skip it: Anyone who needs more espresso than the two shots in an Americano

Latte Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

11. Latte

This ranks higher for me than the previous drinks simply because I am a latte girl. I need a milky base with my dose of caffeine, so lattes will always win out over drip or Americanos for me.

Who will love it: Latte loyalists
Who should skip it: Lactose intolerant coffee connoisseurs

Cappuccino Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

10. Cappuccino

I preferred the McDonald’s cappuccino to a latte because it served up a stronger coffee flavor thanks to a higher percentage of foam. This being said, it still should have had more foam than it did. A standard cappuccino should be half foam, and this was only one-third.

Who will love it: Someone who wants a stronger espresso flavor
Who should skip it: Anyone who would normally go for a dry (i.e. mostly foam) cappuccino

Hazelnut Cappuccino Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

9. Hazelnut Cappuccino

I love me some hazelnut, so this one just beat out the straight-up cappuccino, but I could have done with a bit less sweetness. The flavor itself was actually great though.

Who will love it: Anyone who’s hazelnut-happy
Who should skip it: Anyone who dislikes nutty flavors

Caramel Frappe Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

8. Caramel Frappe

Oh, this one’s a sweet treat! One of my biggest pet peeves is a blended coffee drink that’s too icy, and I am pleased to report that this frappe from the McDonald’s coffee menu was perfectly creamy, if a bit sweet for my taste.

Who will love it: Blended coffee drink enthusiasts
Who should skip it: On-the-rocks folks

Mocha frappe Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

7. Mocha Frappe

This blended delight really brings the chocolate in a way that chocolate-lovers will appreciate, and also makes for a pretty muted coffee flavor. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you!

Who will love it: Those who are big on chocolate and just so-so on coffee
Who should skip it: Coffee purists

Vanilla latte Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

6. Vanilla Latte

The vanilla latte is to the McCafe menu as a white tee is to the wardrobe: classic, consistent and predictably basic the way you count on it to be. It’ll always be a solid choice.

Who will love it: Pretty much everyone
Who should skip it: Almost no one

Mocha Latte Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

5. Mocha Latte

I am not much of a mocha person, so keep that in mind with my rating. I actually really liked this one because it was less a chocolate bomb than it was an extra-creamy and vaguely Christmas-y delight. Two big pluses in my book!

Who will love it: People who want a wintry drink but who think hot chocolate is too sweet
Who should skip it: True chocolate devotees

French Vanilla Latte Mackenzie Schtick For Toh

4. French Vanilla Latte

This one ranks higher than the regular vanilla because I thought it was a more well-rounded flavoring. The “French” part of “French vanilla” is a hint of hazelnut (a little trick for all you at-home baristas!), and it really makes for a warm, malty flavor.

Who will love it: Those who prefer a little softness to their vanilla flavor
Who should skip it: Hazelnut haters

Hot Caramel macchiato Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

3. Caramel Macchiato

Even though I generally shy away from sweet coffee drinks, I’m a sucker for a caramel macchiato. I would have loved more espresso flavor coming through, and the caramel drizzle wasn’t visible on top, but this one had a nice caramel flavor.

Who will love it: Anyone who’s crazy for caramel
Who should skip it: Anyone who’s not about the froufrou drinks

Iced Caramel macchiato Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

2. Iced Caramel Macchiato

Order this if you want a creamy, decadent treat! I’ll usually go for a caramel anything, and this one had a great flavor, was sweet in the way you want a dessert to be sweet (i.e. not overly sweet, but also definitely a treat) and was pretty to look at.

Who will love it: Someone who wants to treat themselves, and prefers on-the-rocks to blended
Who should skip it: Anyone who’s not a dessert person

Iced coffee Mackenzie Schieck For Toh Every Mcdonalds Drink Ranked By A Former Barista

1. Iced Coffee

This was my number one for a few reasons. The McDonald’s iced coffee came lightly sweetened and had a little creaminess to it, making it something you could order without needing to stop at the condiment bar to doctor it up. It was perfect as-is, and the mellow coffee strength made it really refreshing—a word I don’t think I’ve ever used to describe coffee before. We’re officially calling it the best McDonald’s coffee on the menu!

Who will love it: New-to-coffee customers and loyal coffee-lovers alike
Who should skip it: Anyone who is serious about strong coffee—this is not that

A classic French onion soup is a delicious combination of caramelized onions, savory stock and herbs that is topped with a crusty bread and a layer of bubbling cheese, straight from the broiler. While a to-die-for dish in its original form, French onion soup is easy to adapt into different recipes like this French Onion Pasta because the components are so simple. At its core, the soup is about simple flavors coming together—and, oh, do they ever in these French onion soup potatoes that have gone viral on TikTok.

One thing to note about this recipe is that it will take a good hour to caramelize the onions, but we promise, it’s worth the time! These potatoes are absolutely dynamite, so turn on some cooking music, sip on your favorite something and savor the process.

Pour over the wine and cook on medium-high heat until the liquid evaporates. Then add the oil, salt, and pepper. Cook on low at least 1 hour to caramelize. Stir occasionally. Pour the oil onto a half sheet pan and place in the oven to heat up. Fill a pot with water, add the bouillon paste (or just use all beef stock). Add the potatoes. This recipe comes from @scheckeats on TikTok. We used olive oil in this recipe, but, as creator Jeremy Scheck suggests in his TikTok, you can use any neutral cooking oil you have on hand.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dry white wine
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 white onions, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Potatoes:

  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 medium yellow or red potatoes, sliced in 1/2-in. rounds
  • 2 teaspoons of beef bouillon paste
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, roughly chopped
  • 1-1/2 cups Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • Fresh chives, chopped
  • Flaky salt, to taste

Directions

Step 1: Caramelize the onions

Place the onions in a large skillet and pour in the wine. Cook on medium-high heat until the liquid evaporates, about 30 minutes. Then add two to three tablespoons of oil along with the salt and pepper. Cook on low for at least one hour to caramelize, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Prepare the potatoes

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Pour the remaining two to three tablespoons of oil onto a half sheet pan and place in the oven to heat it up. In the meantime, fill a pot with water, stirring in the bouillon paste and kosher salt. Add the potatoes. Cook over high heat until the potatoes are soft enough that a fork can pierce through, but the potatoes don’t fall apart, about 20 minutes. Drain the potatoes.

Step 3: Roast the potatoes

Add the sliced potatoes to the preheated sheet pan in a single layer. Season with salt, thyme and rosemary. Roast until golden brown, for 20-30 minutes, flipping the potatoes halfway through.

Step 4: Add caramelized onions and cheese

Top each potato round with caramelized onions and cheese. Return the pan to the oven to cook until the cheese is melted, about three to five minutes. Garnish with fresh chives and flaky salt.

What Can I Serve with French Onion Soup Potatoes?

This is a great side dish to serve all year round. The potatoes make a savory side for lighter summer entrees like grilled fish, kabobs or chicken. And they would also be a total showstopper on a fall or winter dinner table, paired with other roasted vegetables, a Thanksgiving turkey or a Christmas roast.

Get ready to enjoy a comforting meal with complex, savory flavors that only takes 15 minutes to prep. Serve this slow-cooker Korean beef recipe with steamed rice, spicy cucumber salad, and sauteed spinach, or pile it on a warm corn tortilla topped with kimchi for an easy hand-held meal. It’s a simple but satisfying slow-cooker beef recipe you’ll want to make again and again

What Is Slow-Cooker Korean Beef?

This Korean beef recipe is inspired by the Korean dish galbi. It’s similar to bulgogi, but galbi is made with short ribs while bulgogi is usually made with thinly sliced beef. It’s cooked in a marinade for maximum flavor.

Slow-Cooker Korean Beef Recipe

This recipe from Taste Recipes contributor Lisa Renshaw of Kansas City, Missouri, yields 8 cups.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup gluten-free tamari soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Sriracha chili sauce
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons minced fresh gingerroot
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce or additional soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 boneless beef chuck roast (4 pounds)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup reduced-sodium beef broth

Directions

Step 1: Make the marinade

In a bowl, use a whisk to combine the first nine ingredients into a marinade.

Step 2: Put the ingredients in the slow cooker

Place the beef roast and chopped onions in a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker. Top it with the marinade. Cover and cook on low until the beef is tender, about 9 to 10 hours.

Step 3: Add the roux to the slow cooker

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and beef broth until smooth. Gradually stir the roux into the slow cooker. Continue to cook, covered, on high until the sauce thickens, about 30 minutes.

Step 4: Serve the beef

To serve this slow-cooker Korean beef, transfer it to a cutting board and then use two forks to shred the meat. Place the shredded meat in a serving dish and pour the marinade from the slow cooker on top. Garnish with sliced green onions, if desired.

Tips for Making Slow-Cooker Korean Beef

Make the recipe your own

The marinade works with different proteins, so if you’re not in the mood for beef, swap in a different meat instead. Try it with chicken or pork, adjusting the cook time accordingly. Use this temperature chart as a guide.

What to serve with Korean beef

Serve slow-cooker Korean beef with steamed rice and a sprinkling of thinly sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Or, wrap it in corn or flour tortillas or lettuce leaves. Kimchi, bok choy, bell peppers, pickle radish or broccoli all make good sides or Korean taco toppings.

We also enjoy this recipe with roasted Brussels sprouts or kimchi fried rice. It even works with a simple macaroni salad or a baked potato.

How to store slow-cooker Korean beef

Refrigerate, wrapped tightly in a dish with plastic wrap or in a food storage container with a lid, for three to four days.

To freeze this recipe, arrange the beef in a 13×9-inch baking dish and top it with the marinade. Allow it to cool before covering with plastic wrap or placing it in a freezer bag. If you’re using food storage containers, make sure you leave enough space in the container for the liquid to expand as it freezes. You can freeze this dish for two to three months.

When you’re ready to serve it, thaw the meat partially in the refrigerator overnight. Remove it from the fridge 30 minutes before baking. Preheat the oven to 350°. Reheat the beef, covered, until a thermometer in the center reads 165°, 25 to 30 minutes.

If you’re hosting an outdoor gathering or headed to a potluck, this Mexican macaroni salad will be a hit. And it comes together in a snap! It only takes 20 minutes to whip up, and can easily be made ahead of time.

What Is Mexican Macaroni Salad?

Also known as ensalada de coditos (which roughly translates to “elbow macaroni salad”), this classic Mexican dish is usually served at picnics, quinceaneras and family gatherings. Recipes may include different types of cubed vegetables like red peppers, carrots and celery, but the pickled jalapeno and cubed ham come standard. That’s what makes this dish different from other macaroni salad recipes. A crowd-pleaser all year round, you can’t go wrong bringing this colorful dish to the table for your next get-together!

Mexican Macaroni Salad Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon juice from pickled jalapeno slices
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) mixed vegetables, drained
  • 1/3 cup pickled jalapeno slices, chopped

Tools

Sauce pan: Choose one that’s at least three quarts in size. The cooks in our Test Kitchen love this Caraway saucepan because it features a non-toxic, ceramic-coated interior.
Spatula: This is the world’s best-reviewed spatula, and comes with a lifetime guarantee to back it up.
Measuring spoons: This nesting set with a vintage-inspired silver finish stores easily and looks pretty cute when in use.

Directions

Step 1: Prepare macaroni

In a saucepan, bring salted water to a boil and cook the macaroni to al dente. Then drain and rinse with cold water to get rid of the extra starch. (This keeps pasta from getting mushy when tossed with the dressing.) Cool pasta completely before mixing with other ingredients.

Step 2: Combine the ingredients

First, make the dressing. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, jalapeno juice, mustard, salt and pepper.

In a large bowl, combine ham, mixed vegetables, jalapenos and cooled cooked macaroni. Pour in dressing slowly, gently tossing to coat ingredients.

Step 3: Refrigerate and serve

Refrigerate until serving, at least 2 hours. This allows the flavors to meld together. To serve, garnish with additional pickled jalapeno slices, if desired.

Tips for Making Mexican Macaroni Salad

What type of ham should I use?

Use a pre-cooked, boneless ham for easy cubing. Also, avoid hams with a lot of additional flavors (e.g. smoked or spiced varieties) that could compete with other ingredients in the salad.

How do I keep macaroni from absorbing all of the dressing?

Be sure to cook the elbow pasta to al dente, and rinse with cold water after cooking. Both of these simple steps will ensure that your pasta doesn’t absorb all the dressing.

What can I serve with Mexican macaroni salad?

Any Mexican favorites would be great to pair with this macaroni salad, just be sure there’s a good mix of main dishes and sides. Make your favorite fajitas or tacos, alongside chips and salsa, Mexican rice and some refried beans. The possibilities are endless!

Can I make this salad ahead of time?

Yes, this macaroni salad is even better and more flavorful if made the night before! Just be sure to refrigerate, covered, to keep everything nice and fresh.

It’s time to think about making a gorgeous Christmas charcuterie board for holiday snacking. Perfect for a weekend game night, cozying up next to a fire or as the opening act to a special dinner, these fancy grazing plates add festive flair to an evening at home. And they’re easier than you might think to put together.

Don’t forget to keep this Christmas cheese board guide handy.

How to Make a Charcuterie Wreath

You can’t hang this particular wreath on your door. However, you can dress it up however you like. To get started, you’ll need a cutting board or platter to arrange your “wreath” on, and some small plates for serving if you’d like to gather up several bites at a time. (Cocktail napkins will also do the trick.) Plus, all the fixin’s, of course!

Some delicious go-tos include charcuterie meats, cheeses (sliced or cubed), olives, roasted nuts, creamy spreads, crackers, veggies and herbs (for the leafy part). You can even include some sweet bites like dried fruits, chocolate-covered nuts or one-bite Christmas cookies.

Simply arrange everything in a circle, then serve it up!

How to Clean Grill Grates for Better Tasting and Safer Food https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-clean-grill-grates/ Tue, 28 Apr 2020 20:40:17 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1459031 Learn how to clean grill grates the right way! Follow these tips and your grilled food will taste better and be safer.

The post How to Clean Grill Grates for Better Tasting and Safer Food appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
It’s grilling season! Whether you’re a grill master or a newbie to outdoor cooking, all grillers need to know how to clean grill grates the right way. Dirty grills aren’t just a health hazard, they also change the flavor of your food and can slow down your cooking time! To avoid carcinogens (and bad-tasting burgers and dogs) we provided four easy ways to remove even the toughest of grime. And while you’re at it, be sure to follow these tips on how to get your grill ready for grilling season, too.

Before You Start Cleaning Grill Grates

Determine whether your grill grates are made of porcelain, cast iron or stainless steel. How you clean your grill grates and what products you use depends on what material the grates are made of. Keep these tips in mind before you start scrubbing.

  • Porcelain grates: Porcelain grates are rust-resistant as long as the finish is intact. To clean, use a soft-bristled or nylon brush in lieu of rougher metal or wire brushes.

  • Cast-iron grates: Cast-iron is tough so they can handle those stiff, wire brushes. However, they do rust easily, so we recommend rubbing the grates down with either vegetable or canola oil after cleaning.

  • Stainless Steel grates: These grates are durable and don’t require as much special care as porcelain or cast-iron grates. But, that doesn’t mean they aren’t subject to rusting. To prevent rust, be sure to dry the grates completely before cleaning.

Choose the Right Tools to Clean Grill Grates

While some grillers opt for a traditional grill brush, many do not know wire grill brushes can be slightly dangerous. Wire bristles are notorious for breaking off and falling into your food. Without even realizing it, many people have accidentally ingested these bristles, too. If you feel like swapping in a safer tool, we’ve got plenty of other grill cleaning ideas you can start using today.

  • Aluminum Foil: Grab a handful of aluminum foil, ball it up and use grill tongs to hold it while you scrub away. You can even re-use the same aluminum foil from cooking your favorite foil packet recipes.

  • Nylon Scouring Pad: Grab a scouring pad from your kitchen and take it to the grill for fast and easy cleanup.

  • Grill Stone: Gently rub this pumice-like grill stone back and forth across your grill grates. Then, finish it off by wiping the area clean with a soft cloth or water. It’s that easy.

  • Onion: It might seem a little strange, but you can use half an onion to clean your grill. Just spear the onion on a barbecue fork, and use the cut side to scrub grates clean. The acidic enzymes will break down grease without being overly abrasive. And if you’re cooking with charcoal, the onion can simply be thrown into the coals to discard.

4 Easy Ways to Clean Grill Grates

Cleaning your grill grates may sound daunting, but it doesn’t take much to get them sparkling. Here’s how to clean grill grates four ways.

1. Burnoff

This is the quickest and easiest method for cleaning grill grates. Grill grime, begone!

  1. After you’re done grilling, blast your burners on high with the lid off (or shuffle the coals around if you’re using a charcoal grill) to remove any leftover food or grease.
  2. After 15 minutes, use your grill brush (or alternative tool) to brush the grates clean.

2. Clean with Hot, Soapy Water

In addition to using the burnoff method, we recommend scrubbing your grill grates down with hot, soapy water every month. This way, you can ensure that there isn’t any lingering buildup on your grates. Plus, this method kills two birds with one stone: cleaned grates that are also sanitized by the heat.

  1. Lightly scrub your grates.

  2. Soak in soapy water for an hour and rinse.

  3. Return the grates to your grill, close the lid and warm it up.

  4. After it’s warmed, use your grill brush to scrub any additional residue off the grates.

3. Use Vinegar or a Grill Spray

While cleaning your grill grates with soapy water is our preferred method, some prefer using vinegar or a grill spray.* This trick gets the job done, too.

  1. Mix two cups of water with two cups of vinegar in a spray bottle.

  2. Spray your grill grates with the mixture. Let sit for 10 minutes.

  3. After the 10 minutes is up, brush your grates clean with a grill brush—no rinsing required.

*If you’re using a grill spray, follow the manufacturer’s instructions listed on the bottle.

4. Steam-Clean

Steam-cleaning your grill is always an option. All you need is water and a sponge for this method.

  1. Heat your grill to 600°F, then turn off the heat.

  2. Place a tin, like a large vegetable can or a small coffee can, of water onto the grates.

  3. Close the lid and let it steam for 30 minutes.

  4. Scrub with a silicone sponge to loosen the build-up.

While you’ll definitely still need to give your grill a thorough cleaning before and after each barbecue, you can make the clean-up work easier by oiling your grill grates in advance. Just use a paper towel to rub oil on the grill gates.

How to Clean and Protect the Rest of Your Grill

Your work is not finished just yet. Don’t forget to consistently clean the rest of your grill and your grill tools and accessories. They are just as important to keep sparkling clean. Check out our grill cleaning guide to ensure you haven’t missed a spot while cleaning your grill from top to bottom. Oh, and protect your grill from rain and debris with a good quality grill cover between barbecues.
