“Hooray! It’s time to clean the microwave,” said no one…ever.

Even if you’re the King or Queen of Clean, scrubbing out a microwave ranks up there with trying on bathing suits, deep-cleaning the oven and sifting through the garbage for your child’s discarded retainer. (Read: not fun at all.) From last week’s scorched-on spaghetti sauce to massive chili explosions, microwave remnants are not for the weak-hearted. But messy outcomes shouldn’t keep you from nuking your dinner. Here’s how to clean a microwave with minimal effort.

Wondering how to clean other kitchen appliances? We have cleaning guides for the oven, dishwasher, air fryer and Keurig, too.

What should you clean a microwave with?

Cleaning a microwave requires minimal supplies. In fact, it really only takes a few household items like lemon, baking soda and a dishcloth to get it looking (and smelling) up to par. Pro tip: Keep hands clean by wearing a pair of dishwashing gloves.

How to Clean a Microwave

Tools and Supplies

  • Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner: This editor-loved gadget is the secret to cleaning a microwave with minimal scrubbing. Pour a dash of water and vinegar in the device, heat it in the microwave and watch as steam releases from the Angry Mama’s head. It instantly clears up crusty messes (that’s why it made it on our top picks of cool Amazon products), though it’s smart to give the microwave a proper wipe down post-use.
  • Swedish DishclothsSkip the paper towels and opt for these sustainable Swedish dishcloths. Simply wet one with water and get to wiping!
  • Miracle Wipes: Finish off your microwave cleaning with Miracle Wipes. They remove interior and exterior grime from appliances while leaving a streak-free shine.
  • Pantry Ingredients: Depending on your microwave cleaning method of choice, make sure you have vinegar, baking soda and a lemon on hand.

How to Clean a Microwave With Vinegar

Step 1: Pour in a dash of water and vinegar to the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner’s fill line. Or, pour 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 2: Microwave the Angry Mama on high for two minutes. If using the bowl method, heat the solution in your microwave for 6 to 8 minutes. Then, leave it to sit for an additional 2 minutes.

Step 3: Remove the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner or bowl carefully with oven mitts. Dip a rag (or microfiber towel) into the solution and gently wipe the inside and outside of your microwave. For stubborn residue, use a dish sponge. Voila! That’s how to clean a microwave with vinegar.

How to Clean a Microwave With Baking Soda

Step 1: To clean a microwave with baking soda, fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of water.

Step 2: Heat the bowl in the microwave on high for 5 minutes, then carefully remove the bowl with oven mitts.

Step 3: Dip a sponge (we love any Scrub Daddy product, especially the original sponge) into the solution to wipe the microwave inside and out. For stubborn stains, use the solution as a paste and manually rub each stain with a sponge until the microwave is clean.

How to Clean a Microwave With Lemon

Step 1: Pour 1 cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Slice a lemon in half and squeeze its juice into the bowl. Then, drop both lemon halves into the bowl.

Step 2: Heat the solution in the microwave on high for 5 minutes or until it boils. Then, allow it to sit in the microwave for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the acidity and steam to loosen dried-on food stains.

Step 3: Remove the bowl with oven mitts and wipe the microwave clean with the solution. For any lingering stains, soak a sponge in the solution and rub until the stains dissipate. Your microwave will be good as new and have a clean lemony scent.

How to Remove a Burnt Smell From a Microwave

Knowing how to remove a burnt smell from a microwave is ultra-important. If the stench persists after following the cleaning instructions above, try this:

Step 1: Place a deodorizer inside your microwave, like an open box of baking soda or 1 cup of dried coffee grounds in an uncovered bowl. Leave it inside overnight or for 8 to 12 hours to absorb the odor.

Step 2: Remove the deodorizer from the microwave and discard. Apply vanilla extract, lemon juice or your favorite essential oil to a damp rag and wipe the microwave inside and out.

If it still stinks after following these steps, the smell is likely trapped in the filters. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to replace or clean the filters in your microwave.

FAQs

How do you clean gunk out of the microwave?

If food residue has been lingering in the microwave, heat 1 cup of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the microwave for 5 minutes. This makes it easier to wipe the food remains away while deodorizing the microwave. Mix lemon juice with the baking soda and water solution to leave it smelling extra fresh.

How do you clean a microwave with white vinegar?

If using white vinegar, follow the same steps as above and replace the baking soda with 1 cup of white vinegar.

How often to clean a microwave

Routinely cleaning your microwave prevents food from hardening and drying to the interior surface and flavoring your food with old residue. It’s a smart idea to give your microwave a quick clean once a week by wiping it out with a damp rag (though you should wipe down big messes immediately). Do a deep clean once a month following the steps above to prevent stains from settling in.

Speaking of tidying up, these handy kitchen cleaning products (almost) make cleaning enjoyable! Plus, these fun kitchen tools are guaranteed to cook up a smile and make chores a bit easier.

Recipes with Cereal FAQ

What can I make with cereal?

You can use cereal to make everything from snack mixes and no-bake bars to casseroles and savory coatings. It’s a surprisingly versatile ingredient that adds texture and crunch to a wide variety of dishes. You can also fold it into energy bites, blend it with butter to make crusts for frozen desserts or stir it into homemade granola for added body and bite.

How can I use cereal to make family-friendly cereal snacks?

To make family-friendly cereal snacks, combine cereal with simple pantry staples like nut butter, marshmallows or dried fruit. This quick snack mix is perfect for lunchboxes, after-school snacking or weekend movie nights. You can also roll the mixture into balls, shape it into bars or press it to create clusters. For extra fun, dip your cereal creation in melted chocolate and then roll it in nuts or sprinkles.

What creative cereal recipes can I make for dessert?

Creative cereal desserts range from basic bars to pies, parfaits, cookies and bite-sized treats. You can use cereal instead of graham crackers to form pie crusts, layer it into parfait cups or even press it into truffles or bonbons. Try pairing crisp rice cereal with cookie butter, chocolate and spices to create a no-bake mixture. For an easy handheld dessert, try shaping that mixture into small balls and dipping them in melted chocolate (similar to the Peanut Butter Rice Crispy Balls in the collection above).

How do I store desserts using cereal?

Store cereal-based desserts in an airtight container at room temperature. Consider using parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. Most cereal desserts will last for up to four days on the counter or up to three months in the freezer.

pile of potatoes

Pick the Right Potato

Grab Russet (aka Idaho) potatoes for your baked French fries. They’re high in starch and low in water, so they’ll bake up nicer than other varieties. Plan on using one medium potato for each person at the table.

Are you using the right potato for your recipes?

pile of cut potatoes

Head to the Cutting Board

After scrubbing the potatoes, you can peel them or leave the skins on for a little extra fiber. Carefully slice the potatoes into 1/4- to 1/2-inch-thick fries. Any thinner and you risk the chance of the fries drying out during baking or falling apart in the next step.

potatoes being soaked in water

Soak ’em

Ready for the ultimate secret to crispy baked French fries? (Insert your own drum roll here.) Soak those spuds! Drop the fries into very cold water for 45 minutes. This process, called blanching, will help remove excess starch. You can even set them in the refrigerator if you want. After blanching, rinse the fries and dry them between two clean kitchen towels.

Pro tip: If you’re making a big batch of fries for a large group, add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the water to prevent the potatoes from browning, and soak the spuds for a few hours.

drizzling oil

Season Well

Treat the fries to a light coating of olive oil to help them crisp up while baking. Season with salt, garlic powder or herbs. For easy cleanup, put the fries, oil and seasoning into a resealable storage bag. Close the bag and shake it up! Or, if you’re in the mood for extra flavor, try one of these homemade spice blends.

turning up the oven

Turn up the Heat

Make sure that oven is hot by preheating it to 400° to 425°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or with aluminum foil that’s been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Try not to overlap the fries so they brown equally, and don’t crowd them too tightly in the pan as you’ll need to flip the fries halfway through the baking time. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

french fries and ketchup

Enjoy

And there you have it: crispy, crunchy fries without a deep fryer. Feel free to get creative with seasonings or experiment with different oils. So what are you waiting for? Grab a few potatoes and bake up a batch tonight! Psst: They go great with our favorite burger recipes.

We Reviewed the New Stubb’s BBQ Sauce and Here’s What We Found https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/stubbs-bbq-sauce/ Thu, 14 Jun 2018 01:09:19 +0000 http://origin-www.tasteofhome.com/?p=699751 With dozens of barbecue sauce brands and flavors vying for attention at the grocery store, will Stubb's new offering spark a fire with grill masters? Our on-staff grill master gave it a shot, and here's what he thought.

Like any red-blooded American, I love a good barbecue sauce—especially when it’s one of the homemade recipes our readers send in.  Not only is the finger-licking summer staple a must on grilled greats, but I also think it’s a lip-smacking addition to chicken fingers and potato skins. I’ve even used it with egg rolls when there was no sweet-and-sour sauce in the house. (Don’t judge me!)

So, when I had the chance to sample the limited edition of Stubb’s Sweet Honey & Spice Legendary Bar-B-Q Sauce, I thought I hit the lottery of writing assignments. I decided to put the new product to the test—a taste test.

Test #1: Grilled Pork Chops

The first test? Stubb’s sauce on grilled pork chops. (And if you want to grill your own chops, check out this 5-star recipe for Favorite Grilled Pork Chops!)

Initially, I was surprised how thin the sauce was. Personally, I like a thick sauce you have to slather on…one that really clings to the meat. No biggie, though. I happily grilled up the juicy pork chops and moved onto the taste test.

In the end, the chops were good, but the flavor of the sauce seemed a bit weak. I prefer barbecue sauces that feature a hint of sweetness, and I was slightly disappointed in this Sweet Honey & Spice variety.

Test #2: Skillet Chicken

The next night was nutty at our house, so I simmered up chicken breasts in a skillet with Stubb’s sauce. The sauce did thicken a bit as it cooked, but it was still thinner than I like. The flavor of the sauce came through better in this dish, but the vinegar, allspice and pepper masked any hint of honey. I served the chicken with potatoes wedges on the side, and the sauce complimented the spuds nicely.

Test #3: Burgers

Who doesn’t love a thick juicy burger? Everyone—that’s who. That said, my final taste test was using Stubb’s sauce was over All-American Bacon Cheeseburgers. The sauce held it’s own here—perhaps because I didn’t cook with it. Not as thick as ketchup, the sauce added change-of-pace spices and flair to my burger and complemented the bacon, cheddar and beef well.

My Conclusion

Today’s grocery shelves are lined with barbecue sauces, and many home cooks are stirring up their own sauces. As such, I’m not sure Stubb’s Sweet Honey & Spice Legendary Bar-B-Q Sauce will stand out against the competition. Don’t get me wrong—it’s not bad. I’m actually willing to bet plenty of barbecue-fanatics are going to like it. The thin texture, lack of sweetness and strong vinegar flavor just didn’t satiate the taste buds in my house. Sorry Mr. Stubb!

Have a BBQ sauce you love? Try it in one of these delish recipes.

We Tried bNutty Gourmet Peanut Butter. Here’s What You Need to Know. https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/bnutty-gourmet-peanut-butter/ Thu, 17 May 2018 16:17:38 +0000 http://origin-www.tasteofhome.com/?p=626879 Are fancy-smancy spreads worth the price? Our peanut butter pro took one brand to the (taste) test. You'll be surprised at what he found.

Who doesn’t love peanut butter? The brown-bag fixture strikes a chord in people of all ages and remains a pantry staple in homes from coast to coast. It’s no surprise, then, that chefs, entrepreneurs and culinary geniuses eagerly try to take peanut butter to new and “classy” heights. And I can’t blame them. I love the stuff!

So, when my boss asked if I’d like to sample some all-natural artesian peanut butters from bNutty, I jumped at the chance. (“Let me get this straight. You’re going to pay me for eating fancy peanut butter? Cool! Let’s do this! Now. Like, give me the peanut butter now. NOW!”)

BNutty relies on peanuts grown in the US to create a honey-roasted peanut butter, serving as the base for 12 flavors. You can purchase a 2-oz jar for $3 or a 12-oz jar for $8. See their web site to learn more.

The gourmet spreads promise to take you “beyond peanut butter” with flavors such as Blissful Blueberry, Simply Salted Caramel, Java Energy and Totally Toffee. I put three flavors to the test: Irresistible Pretzel, Joyful Cranberry and S’more Dreams.

bnutty.com

Irresistible Pretzel Peanut Butter

Irresistible Pretzel is an insanely chunky concoction of peanut butter chopped nuts, pretzel bits and white chocolate. (Yes, I said white chocolate!) Pretzels and peanut butter are a combo made by the snack gods, and the while chocolate mellows the savory mixture in just the right way. If you like your peanut butter smooth, this likely isn’t the spread for you; but lovers of the crunch are will go nuts (pun intended) over the addictive delight.

Eat it by the spoonful right out of the jar when snack attacks come calling. (Not that I’ve done that. Okay. I’ve done that.) It would also be perfect on apple wedges and celery sticks. And if peanut butter, pretzels and chocolate are your thing, then check out these four-ingredient pretzel rods.

Joyful Cranberry Peanut Butter

Next up—Joyful Cranberry Peanut Butter. I must admit that I’m not a huge fan of dried berries or dried fruit…or fruit in general. (Okay, I like junk food! Happy now?) There was something about peanut butter dotted with ruby-red berries however that intrigued me.

Unfortunately, this combo didn’t live up to my hopes. There weren’t enough cranberries to sweeten the deal, they looked like little raisins and the few berries I encountered had a way-chewy texture that freaked me out a bit.

If you like ants on a log (raisins and peanut butter on celery sticks), this might be the gourmet peanut butter for you.

S’more Dreams Peanut Butter

Everyone loves s’mores, right? So why not combine that fireside favorite with peanut butter? I mean, just look at all of these insane s’more desserts. We just can’t seem to get enough of the ooey-gooey treats.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I opened the jar of S’more Dreams, so I dove in with my spoon and took a taste. Then another. And then another. Before I knew it, my 2-oz jar of crunchy goodness was nearly gone. While I can’t say that this sweet specialty tasted like s’mores, I can say that it was super yummy. (How’s that for a technical review?) This delightful combo of flavors and textures stole the show during my peanut-butter palooza.

Sticky Situation

Are gourmet peanut butters worth it? For me, the jury is still out. While I could easily inhale a 2-oz jar during a quick $3 lunch, I’m not sure I’d spend $8 on a 12-oz. jar. That said, bNutty’s attempts at taking my taste buds “beyond peanut butter” worked, and their products peaked my interest to sample more. In fact, I plan to test the company’s other flavors soon.

Am I peanut butter snob? Hardly. But as long as food manufactures are going to push the envelope where our favorite lunch spread is concerned, I’ll be there to sample their lip-smacking successes.

It’s almost party time! Guests will start arriving soon, and you’re dashing around, putting the final touches on everything. All that’s left to do is tidy up your home bar. You hit the freezer to fill the ice bucket and…ugh! The ice cubes are stuck together in one giant clump. You either need to take the time to bust those frosty suckers apart or find really huge cocktail glasses. If you want your cocktails to look perfect, then learn to make clear ice cubes.

Don’t put yourself in this situation again! While there are dozens of ways to break up ice cubes, it’s actually a cinch to keep them from sticking together in the first place. In fact, this secret has been around so long, your great-grandparents likely knew about it. What is this sub-zero strategy? It’s simple!

Store your ice cubes in a paper bag.

We’re talking about the sort of bag your mom used for school lunches or the type that grocery-store clerks suggest. (“Paper or plastic?” Choose paper next time just for this purpose.) Whether you rely on your ice dispenser, use an ice cube tray or buy it by the pound, quickly transfer the cubes to a clean paper bag. Fold it closed and store it in the freezer. Pull out the cubes as you need them. They shouldn’t stick together.

Why does this work? Who knows! (What are we? Physicists?) Some sources say the paper absorbs extra moisture, unlike plastic-bag counterparts. When excess moisture is minimized, there is less chance of it freezing the cubes together.

If you’re making a lot of ice for a party, start filling the bag a week or two early. If you’re using the ice for adult beverages and mocktails at home, fill a smaller bag, and refill as needed. So stop chiseling blocks of ice, and quit ticking off your downstairs neighbors by banging bags of ice on the floor. Just grab a paper bag, fill it with cubes and let the party commence!

Try these tapas for your next party!

What’s the Best Potato for the Job? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/what-types-of-potatoes-are-best-for-which-recipes/ Wed, 25 Oct 2017 17:18:06 +0000 http://origin-www.tasteofhome.com/?p=369212 Potato salad not turning out like Mom's? Au gratin a mushy mess? You might be using the wrong spud. Discover which types of potatoes work best in which dishes for mealtime success.

Whether mashed or baked, roasted or fried, you can’t beat potatoes for comfort. But your carb-o-licious dish might get a thumbs-down review if you don’t select the right spud. Potatoes fall into one of three categories: starchy, waxy and all-purpose. For the best results, match your tator to your recipe. Here’s what you need to know about the choices:

Russet (aka Idaho)

These oblong potatoes are perfect for mashing and baking due to their thick skin and fluffy flesh. Their high-starch content makes them the perfect choice when making French fries, too.

Red (aka New)

These waxy potatoes are the darlings of the salad set because they look great, keep their shape, and offer a creamy texture. They’re low in starch and high in moisture so they’re perfect when boiled or roasted.

White Potatoes

Similar looking to Russets, use these guys when the recipe calls for boiling potatoes. Because they hold their shape so well, they’re also great in casseroles, soups and stews.

Round Potatoes (aka Irish)

Use these like you’d use white potatoes—in stews, soups and casseroles. They have thinner skins than most varieties, but they hold up nicely during long cook times.

Yukon Golds

When you don’t know what potato to use, turn to Yukon Golds. These all-purpose spuds have just the right combo of starch and moisture to hold up to nearly any cooking technique, including grilling, yet they come out golden on the outside and tender on the inside.

Sweet Potatoes

This one is a no-brainer. Simply use sweet potatoes when a recipe calls for them. That’s it! What’s the difference between a sweet potato and a yam? Don’t worry about it. Just stick to sweet potatoes for sweet potato recipes, and you’ll be just fine.

Before You Buy

No matter which type of potato you need, choose ones with healthy skin—no cuts, bruises or blemishes. If you see a bit of green under the potato skin, put that spud back in the bin. You want potatoes that are firm and feel heavy for their size. Once you get them home, store them in a cool, dark, dry spot. Keep them out of the refrigerator. Right before using, scrub your spud with a vegetable brush, and use a small knife to remove any potato sprouts or “eyes.”

Now that your know what potato’s best for the job, you can get cooking…or baking, boiling, grilling or roasting.
