Caramelized Onion Pasta Ingredients

  • Butter: Using butter to caramelize onions adds a lovely aroma and a nutty flavor. Just be sure the butter doesn’t burn, as it has a lower smoke point than oil.
  • Onions: Vidalia or yellow onions are best for caramelizing, as these varieties are naturally sweet.
  • Red pepper flakes: A staple on many Italian tables, red pepper flakes are made from the peperoncino variety of pepper.
  • Garlic: This recipe is meant to be garlic-forward, but you can toggle up or down with the amount however much you want.
  • Grape tomatoes: With their burst of flavor and meaty texture, grape tomatoes help complete the flavor profile of this pasta dish.
  • Balsamic vinegar: Sweet and vibrant, a touch of balsamic vinegar makes all the difference. We suggest a high-quality variety like balsamic vinegar of Modena, with a rating of two or more leaves.
  • Olive oil: The olive oil in this recipe is primarily used as a finishing oil, so we recommend using one with a flavor you really enjoy.
  • Angel hair pasta: Similar to capellini, this variety of pasta is extra thin. As a result, it’s excellent for absorbing flavors.
  • Bacon: A little bacon goes a long way, adding a punch of savory flavor to this dish. If you’d like, you can substitute it with guanciale or pancetta.
  • Parmesan: Nutty and salty, fresh grated Parmesan is the chef’s kiss to this dish. Either Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano will do the trick.
  • Basil (optional): Fragrant fresh basil leaves feature a peppery, licorice-like flavor. If you prefer, you can simply leave them out or substitute them with another fresh herb of your choice.
