Pizza subs are an example of a food that you can serve to pretty much any group of people at pretty much any time in pretty much any location and you’ll be met with universal gratitude and excitement. Delicious, savory and hearty, this is the food to serve when you’ve got hungry tummies of all ages coming to the table.

Another satisfying thing about making these pizza subs is that they’re super easy to prepare. This pizza sub recipe requires effectively one step of preparation and then a bit of patience as the subs bake in the oven. And once you’ve tried the recipe, you can put your own custom spin on it.

Pizza Subs Ingredients

  • Submarine sandwich buns: As portioned here, you need six split sandwich buns, each about 9 inches long.
  • Bulk Italian sausage: Use half a pound of bulk Italian sausage that has been cooked and drained.
  • Deli ham: For the pound of deli ham, make sure it is shaved thin.
  • Pizza sauce: Choose your favorite pizza sauce for this recipe; whether it has a bit of spice is your call.
  • Mozzarella cheese: You’ll be using 18 slices of cheese for these six sandwiches, and we recommend a part skim mozzarella.
  • Onion: For the medium onion, which will be halved and thinly sliced, use a white or a yellow onion.
  • Mild banana pepper: You’ll need about 36 rings of mild banana pepper, so pay attention as you’re slicing.
  • Pepperoni: You’ll need about 7 ounces of sliced pepperoni in total, which is usually two packages’ worth.
  • Hard salami: For the salami, use about a quarter of a pound total, and make sure it’s sliced thin.

Super Pizza Subs Variations

  • Spice it up: Swap out the banana peppers for jalapenos to add some heat, and sprinkle on a bit of red pepper flakes to spice things up even more.
  • Drizzle some oil: Drizzling about a teaspoon of olive oil over the sub ingredients before placing the top halves of the bread on adds a richness while helping tie together the flavors.
  • Skip the salami: If there is one ingredients to consider skipping, it’s the hard salami, and simply because it can be hard to safely slice it thin enough, and if the pieces are too thick, they’ll be unpleasant to bite into.

How to Store Super Pizza Subs

Keep any uneaten pizza subs in the fridge for up to four days, provided they are wrapped tightly in airtight packaging.

How to reheat pizza subs

To reheat these subs, re-wrap them in foil and then pop them back in an oven heated to 400º for 10 minutes.
