Knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/collection\/how-to-measure-ingredients\/\">how to measure ingredients<\/a> can be tricky, though, especially with finer ingredients like flour.\r\n\r\nTo illustrate how easy it is to make a measuring mistake, we devised an impromptu test. Our Test Kitchen pros asked other <em>Taste Recipes<\/em> staffers to measure flour as they would at home, and the results were staggering. Some measured cups of flour as light as 3 ounces and some as heavy as 5-1\/2 ounces. In short, a far cry from the correct weight of a cup of flour: 4-1\/4 ounces. That extra ounce or two can turn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/recipes\/the-ultimate-chocolate-chip-cookie\/\">chocolate chip cookies<\/a> into hockey pucks. But there are some secrets to getting a more accurate measurement with this basic tool. As a rule, flour should not be compacted when being measured\u2014you'll end up with far too much of the ingredient.\r\n\r\nHere's how to properly measure flour by volume:\r\n<h4>Step 1: Fluff up the flour<\/h4>\r\nFlour settles in storage, so it needs to be loosened with a spoon or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/article\/whisk-types-guide\/\">whisk<\/a>. Aerating the flour helps prevent overmeasuring.\r\n<h4>Step 2: Fill the measuring cup<\/h4>\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-365874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GHTAJ17_4128_B06_27_2b.jpg?fit=696,1024\" alt=\"Person using a knife to even off the top of a measuring cup filled with flour\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" \/>\r\n\r\nNext, spoon the flour into a measuring cup until heaping (piled beyond the rim of the measuring cup). Doing so will result in a lot less flour than the recipe calls for.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Before measuring, fluff up the flour in the container by stirring with a spoon or whisk.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Don't use your measuring cup to scoop the flour. Spoon it into the measuring cup for better accuracy.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">There's a right way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/article\/how-to-measure-wet-and-dry-ingredients\/\">measure wet and dry ingredients<\/a>, so make sure you're using a measuring cup that's made for dry ingredients. A coffee mug, rice measuring cup or a measuring cup for wet ingredients won't give you the correct result!<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">Don't pack the flour down with the spoon as you're scooping.
