I have been making this for years and it is a favorite at family gatherings, especially for summer cookouts. I usually finish cooking on low in a Crock Pot. Only changes I made are I use baby butter beans instead of the regular size and rinsed black beans instead of kidney beans as they are not a favorite. I taste before I add all the sugar just to make sure it's not too sweet. Great recipe!

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2022-04-30
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Pamela6778
I have never reviewed a recipe that I have not made 100% as written for the first time. This is my exception because the recipe delivered in an exceptional way.

I had ground beef for dinner, and wanted something that wasn't Italian or pasta. I wanted it to be easy and crockpot friendly as well. My husband and son are picky eaters. It is a genuine challenge to find something we all like. After "Googling" recipe ideas, I found this one. It was appealing because it was a crockpot meal, contained beans (one of the few nutritional ingredients the entire family likes) and for the most part I had everything in the pantry.

My changes were as followed:
I replaced the can of butter beans with an equal amount of frozen lima beans (previously thawed) and I used a can of pinto beans instead of pork and beans. I did not have crumbled bacon, but I did have bacon grease, so I added a tablespoon.

I cut the sugar in half based on other review, and added a dash of liquid smoke. I put the crock in the fridge overnight. My spouse and I work different shifts, so he started cooking before leaving for work at 1PM. (Based on the recipe dinner should have been ready at 5).

I definitely plan to make this again - the entire family really liked it. However, I have some thoughts........

Made this today for a side dish for 4th of July BBQ-made it exact and it was so good! Next time I make I will do it in the crockpot so I don’t have to run the oven in the dead of summer. I probably left these in the oven at 375 about 20 minutes longer & then turned heat down to 300 and maybe another 15 minutes and I think they were just a tiny bit over cooked but still delish!

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-11-15
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Mark5209

I made this, but of course like everything else I make, I always change it up a bit for my taste preferences. I used one can of Steakhouse Grilling baked beans, substituted the ketchup sause for smoke flavored barbecue sauce. I deleted the kidney beans, because i don't care for them, and the lima (butter) beans because there were none of them at the store. So I added black eyed peas instead, which I find more easily digestible, and another smaller can of plain northern beans. It was wonderful. Next time I'm also going to add about a cup of finely diced green peppers too. I also deleted the extra brown sugar since the can of Grilling Beans already had brown sugar in them.

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2017-03-08
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
BarbHolding
I have made this recipe several times.
