This recipe has the most interesting flavor that I have ever had. It is very mildly and pleasantly sweet yet still deeply savory. It reminded me of the German dishes my mom used to make. While short ribs are a PIA to make (I would never buy them on purpose), they taste very good - very deeply beefy (and very fatty). We purchase a half of a cow at a time, and short ribs come with the package. I made mine with good quality buttered egg noodles, but it just didn't seem to do the dish justice. I think it would be better with mashed potatoes. I would not make this recipe without a gravy separator. I found it necessary to thicken the gravy (once a huge amount of fat is removed) with cornstarch slurry then separate the meat from the fat before placing the meat back into the gravy to warm it through. I served the dish with steamed carrots. I was shocked that I did not get indigestion from the fatty content of this meal; I must have done a thorough job of removing the fat. Huge amounts of fat. I still give it five stars because the flavor is outstanding.<\/p>

Made this yesterday and both my man friend and I loved it. I followed the recipe exactly (although my crockpot must run hot as it did not take near the recommended time for cooking before it was done). I used regular Mango Chutney, not spicy Mango Chutney. The chutney was a little hard to find at the store, but I was not looking in the right section. A clerk at Whole Foods directed me to the International food aisle, and both regular and spicy chutney were there in a couple of different brands. The meat absolutely fell of the bones. I served it on egg noodles, although I might try mashed potatoes next time. An added bonus was that it smelled wonderful while cooking.
