There’s nothing better than a hot drink in the morning. If you’re not a fan of coffee, chai tea is a fantastic alternative that’s packed with bold, layered flavors. We love this recipe for chai tea mix because it can be prepared in bulk and stored in a cool, dry place for up to a year. It’s easy to prepare too. Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves and allspice combine to create a warm and nourishing spice blend that’s pleasantly sweet.

Once the spice mix is combined, add 1/4 cup of the blend to a mug and top it with warm milk. The result is a cozy latte that’s layered with spicy, vibrant flavors.

In a large bowl, combine the sugar, instant tea, French vanilla nondairy creamer, nondairy creamer, brown sugar, milk powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, allspice and white pepper. In a blender, cover and process the tea mixture in batches until it’s powdery.

To prepare chai tea, place 1/4 cup of the mix in a mug. Add the hot milk, then stir until combined.

Once the mix is blended, transfer it to an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid. A deli container or mason jar is a great choice. This chai tea spice mix should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Chai tea mix can be stored at room temperature for up to a year. Store it in a cool, dry place to ensure that the spices stay fresh and moisture in the air doesn’t impact the dry mix.

This spice blend already contains sugar and brown sugar. As a result, it’s fairly sweet on its own. However, if you like your tea extra sweet, you can absolutely add a bit more sugar to your liking when you make a cup.

This chai mix spice is a fantastic seasoning for sweet and savory foods. You can use it to flavor frosting in these chai cupcakes, or as a spice enhancer in these chocolate chai mini loaves. For more, here’s a roundup of our favorite chai-infused recipes.

If you prefer a lighter, less creamy beverage, you can certainly make this tea with boiling water instead of hot milk. Water allows the pure flavor of the spices to shine through.

For a spicy morning beverage or afternoon tea that’s packed with bold flavor, try this homemade chai tea mix. It is wonderful! I think the spice mixture is perfect as is, especially for gift giving! Flavorful but not too strong. I used 2.5 cups of instant tea, because there was half a cup left at the bottom of the jar, and I prefer to taste the tea. I skipped the french vanilla creamer, increased the plain creamer accordingly, and used 2 cups of powdered milk. I agree with 4thefam 100% - the amount of sugar listed would be WAY too sweet for my taste, so I used homemade vanilla sugar (add 2 tsp. vanilla extract to 2 c. sugar in the raw, let dry overnight; break up lumps w/your fingers). The trip thru the food processor took a little bit of time, but I had very little residue in the bottom of my cup. I sampled the mix with hot water and hot milk - both very good! Thank goodness I have plenty of each of the spices, so making this again and again (for gifts and for home!) won't be terribly expensive.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2012-01-27
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
dreamon01
I made a few changes, but overall it is quite good. First, I added 1 1/4 tsp of ginger. Other chai teas I have made (fresh from teabags) had ginger as a primary spice and this one is lacking the ginger. I made mine with hot water, not hot milk, at the end. I suppose really the difference is if you want chai TEA or chai latte. Since this is supposed to be chai TEA it already has tons on milk product in it....powdered milk and 2 kinds of creamers. So,I added my ginger and my hot water. Loved the spice, I can live with how sweet it is but the problem here is that you are still left with all the spice sediment in the bottom of the cup. Normally with chai tea the spices (in whole seed/clove format) are strained out of the tea and you don't have all the junk left on the bottom of the cup. Well I fixed that too. I filled up my coffee maker filter basket with the mix and made 2 batches in my coffee pot. Voila. The junk is strained out. I made a big jug of it like this and put that in the fridge. If we want it hot, can reheat in microwave; since my daughter likes it better as iced chai she can just throw ice in a glass and make hers that way. Even going to the effort of running the mix through the coffee maker's filter basket is a lot easier than making a pot of chai from fresh tea leaves once you get this big batch of mix thrown together.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2011-12-10
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
medabear
Good as is, next time I would reduce the nutmeg (a little too strong for my preference).
