This Is the Only Thing Keith Richards Eats Before Rolling Stones Concerts https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/keith-richards-shepherds-pie/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/keith-richards-shepherds-pie/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2025 22:14:44 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2124071 If rock icon Keith Richards doesn't get a particular pie before a show, the show simply won't happen.

Music icons are made of different stuff than the rest of us, and there is perhaps no clearer evidence of this fact than the unusual eating habits of some of the world’s biggest rock stars.

Willie Nelson eats oatmeal every single morning. Ringo Starr has somehow avoided eating pizza for his entire lifetime. Being unusual is far from unusual in this world, but the dinner Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards requires before every concert he plays? Get ready for an inspired choice.

What does Keith Richards eat before concerts?

According to the BBC, Keith eats shepherd’s pie before every gig the band plays. The icon is said to have developed a taste for the classic comfort dish thanks to his mother Doris and grandfather Gus, who both used to prepare it for him.

The tradition dates back to at least the late ’80s, when Keith first requested the dish on the band’s catering menu to help life on tour feel more like life at home. According to Classic Rock, Keith was so adamant about his shepherd’s pie that if he didn’t get it, he would refuse to play the show. He once nearly postponed a show because the opening band, the Stereophonics, had eaten Keith’s pie before he’d gotten to it.

“It’s now famous, my rule on the road,” Keith wrote in his 2010 autobiography Life. “Nobody touches the shepherd’s pie till I’ve been in there. Don’t bust my crust, baby.”

What made Keith Richards’ shepherd’s pie unique?

Keith also has a “top secret” hack for the perfect shepherd’s pie, which he let the BBC in on. Thanks to a tip from his late security guard, Joe Seabrook, he likes to add a layer of chopped onions to the pie before it is topped with mashed potatoes.

“That does add zest to the whole thing,” Keith told the BBC. “It’s, I thought, the crowning glory of the shepherd’s pie.”

I Found a Quick $10 Fix to Keep My Cheese Fresh for Weeks https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-keep-cheese-fresh/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 21:55:18 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2122785 Say goodbye to sad, dried-out cheese.

The post I Found a Quick $10 Fix to Keep My Cheese Fresh for Weeks appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Since reading American Cheese by Joe Berkowitz, I’ve been frequenting my local cheese shop more often, slowly checking things off my new Cheese Bucket List. The cheesemonger, wanting me to get the most out of my Alp Blossom and Rogue River Blue, told me that the best way to store cheese is by wrapping it in parchment paper “so it can breathe,” then stashing it in an airtight container so the cheese doesn’t dry out.

Immediately, I thought about the poor blocks of cheddar and part-skim mozzarella in my fridge, either half dried out or suffocating in plastic wrap. Oops.

I used her suggestion, but containers started piling up in my fridge. Between an excess of plastic wrap waste and an abundance of containers stacked in my fridge, I felt like I was losing—against cheese.

Then one day, “Cheese Huggers” came across my desk. Tillamook, one of my favorite cheese brands, teamed up with a company called Food Huggers to make something that solved my cheese storage situation.

What are Cheese Huggers?

Tillamook’s Cheese Huggers are reusable covers made from food-grade silicone. To use one, press the cut side of a block of cheese into the Cheese Hugger. The silicone creates a tight seal around the cheese, keeping it fresher, longer.

I was so excited to try it. Would this little cover really keep my cheese fresh and get all those containers out of my fridge?

The answer was yes; it worked! I’ve had it for weeks now and have tried it on blocks of feta, cheddar and Gruyere (my favorite!). They all stayed nice and fresh for my cheese boards and cheese recipes. When I’m done with a block of cheese, I toss the Cheese Hugger into the silverware holder in my dishwasher. Easy!

There are a few things to keep in mind, though. First, you obviously can’t use Cheese Huggers to store shredded cheese. Second, the Cheese Huggers do not fit around every cheese shape, only rectangular blocks. The measurements on Tillamook’s website read that the opening fits 1″ x 2 1/8″ to 1″ x 2 1/2″.

You should also learn from my mistake: The first time I used the Huggers, I cut the cheese’s packaging way too far up the block, which kept some of my cheese exposed in the fridge where the Hugger couldn’t reach, drying it out. However, the part of the cheese that was snugged into the Hugger was as fresh as the day I opened it! After that, I made sure not to cut too high up on the cheese’s packaging. I even tuck the excess packaging into the Hugger to protect the whole block.

Where can I find a Cheese Hugger?

Look for Cheese Huggers on Tillamook’s website. Each package is $10 and comes with two Cheese Huggers. You can also buy non-branded Cheese Huggers on Food Hugger’s website. Each package has four Huggers in different sizes for $14.99.

I Tried Taylor Swift’s Favorite Candy, and Now It’s My Favorite Candy Too https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/taylor-swift-favorite-candy/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 21:25:35 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2122108 Taylor Swift writes breakup songs, but when it comes to candy, she's fully committed.

The post I Tried Taylor Swift’s Favorite Candy, and Now It’s My Favorite Candy Too appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Fans know all of Taylor Swift’s likes and dislikes. Likes: cats. Dislikes: haters. She definitely likes to bake, and her homemade Pop Tarts and her chai cookie recipe went viral. In her 2016 Netflix documentary Miss Americana, she even cooks spaghetti for her best friend, Abigail.

But what does she reach for when she doesn’t feel like shaking off a bunch of flour? I found out Taylor Swift’s favorite candy, and I obviously had to buy some of my own.

What is Taylor Swift’s favorite candy?

In a 2019 interview, she mentioned a candy from the U.K. called Squashies. “I was like ‘This is legit candy,’” Taylor recalled. “It’s gummy, it tastes like a combination of strawberries and raspberries, also cherries, it’s pink and white, it’s all the things I love.”

What do Squashies taste like?

I’m a huge fan of gummy candies, so it’s nice to know that Taylor and I have the same taste. I ordered three flavors: Original Raspberry (which is what she described in the interview), Bubblegum, and Cherry and Apple.

I tried the Original Raspberry first. I was surprised by how light and fluffy these are! They’re like a combination of taffy and gum, with that super-soft quality of circus peanuts. If you’re someone who wonders what it might be like to chew on a makeup sponge, I feel like Squashies are going to scratch that itch for you in a much more flavorful way.

The flavor is strong but not overpowering. I think the way she describes it is accurate. Even though this is technically “raspberry,” it’s a very good mix of generic “red berry” candy flavor. The Bubblegum flavor is also delicious and made me feel like a kid again. There’s something nostalgic about classic bubblegum flavor, especially in this chewy form.

If I had to pick a favorite, though, it would definitely be the Cherry and Apple! I didn’t know it when I ordered them, but this is actually a sour Squashie option. It has just a hit of sourness that elevates the flavor of both cherry and apple without being too pucker-inducing. Plus, it didn’t have any of that sour “sugar” dusting on it that a lot of sour gummy candies typically have. It was all the flavor without any of the mess, and I appreciated that.

Where can you buy Squashies?

Since these are a U.K. product, it can be tricky to find them. I bought my Squashies on a website called Candy Funhouse, and they cost $10 to ship but arrived from Canada within a couple of days. Candy Funhouse seems to have the most availability of flavors if you just want to give them a try, but you can also buy Squashies in bulk on Amazon. If you have a blank space in your pantry, you should fill it with Squashies.

Harrison Ford’s Secret Ingredient for a Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/harrison-ford-grilled-cheese-sandwich/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 21:16:06 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2123167 When he's not saving the galaxy, Harrison Ford is perfecting the art of the grilled cheese.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that everyone needs to eat. And yet, there’s something so fascinating about learning what kinds of food our favorite celebrities have on the table. It puts a smile on my face to know that comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short love poached eggs on toast. Or that Meryl Streep makes this Julia Child recipe last for a week’s worth of leftovers!

Beyond the basics, learning about the stars’ secret ingredients is even more thrilling. Did you know that Harrison Ford uses a secret ingredient to make his grilled cheese sandwiches delicious?

What is Harrison Ford’s secret ingredient?

No, it’s not the Force. In a Mashed interview, Ford’s son Ben revealed that his dad makes grilled cheese with whole wheat bread, sharp cheddar cheese, tomatoes and Worcestershire sauce.

While I still think that the most classic grilled cheese sandwich is white bread with American cheese, Ford’s creation is really interesting. And sure, a lot of people love pairing grilled cheese with tomato soup, so why not cut out the middleman and put the tomato right on the sandwich?

The addition of the Worcestershire sauce ends up giving the whole sandwich a kind of savory, umami kick. It’s a sandwich combo so good that Ben can’t get enough of it—and he’s a professional chef.

What other tips can elevate a grilled cheese?

Whether you want to give Harrison Ford’s Worcestershire tip a go or not, there are some pretty great ways to make a grilled cheese feel fancier and taste even more delicious. Like Harrison Ford, you can experiment with different kinds of bread, cheese and condiments. Personally, I love a little bit of yellow mayo on a classic grilled cheese.

And perhaps the best hack ever for ensuring a crispy, flavorful finish on the bread? It’s a tried-and-true Reddit hack: Use mayo on the outside of the bread instead of butter. It will fry up evenly in the pan for a perfect golden brown texture every time.

Dairy Queen Is Giving Away Free Ice Cream Cones—Here’s How to Grab Yours https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/dairy-queen-free-cone-day-2025/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 18:07:47 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2124205 Here’s when to pick up a free ice cream cone, courtesy of DQ.

It’s been a long winter, but spring is right around the corner. It’s time for the snow to thaw and daffodils to poke up through the soil! I mark this important transition with three significant things: the first sighting of a robin, the start of baseball season and, of course, Free Cone Day at Dairy Queen.

While it’s true that you can enjoy ice cream year-round, Dairy Queen knows that its sweet treats have a special place in our hearts during the warmer months. That’s why DQ wants to treat you to free ice cream to usher in the season.

When is Dairy Queen Free Cone Day?

Free Cone Day 2025 will be on Thursday, March 20, aka the official first day of spring. You can visit any DQ and ask for a free small vanilla soft serve cone with that signature Dairy Queen swirl on top. Just two things to keep in mind: There’s a limit of one cone per customer, and you can’t order using the mobile app.

That’s not the only reason to celebrate. DQ is also launching a sweepstakes leading up to Free Cone Day. Now through March 19, download the DQ App and sign up for rewards for a chance to win free cones for an entire year!

Why does Dairy Queen do Free Cone Day?

It’s a day of appreciation and thanks for all their loyal treat enthusiasts. The tradition started in 2014 and has happened almost every year on the first day of spring. (It was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic.) You might want to add this day to your calendar so you never miss out on free ice cream!

While you’re at Dairy Queen, I highly suggest that you check out their new limited edition Crunchin’ Cookie Dipped Cone. It’s a cone dipped in a crunchy blue cookie confection that will be in my order rotation while it lasts.

If you made a Walmart, Target or Great Eagle run lately, check to see if you have any recalled oyster crackers. Shearer’s Foods, which supplies oyster crackers that are sold as store brands, recently issued a recall in 24 states because of a possible contamination risk. The oyster crackers could contain pieces of stainless steel wire.

What caused the recall?

The recall affects 15,874 total cases of the product. The oyster crackers were recalled over the possibility of contamination by a foreign object. Specifically, they could contain small pieces of metal in the form of stainless steel wire, which should never be ingested.

The recall was initiated as a Class III on February 21, which means “use of or exposure to is not likely to cause adverse health consequences,” per the FDA. But on March 11, the FDA updated this recall to a Class II, meaning “use of or exposure to may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

What states are affected by the recall?

The recalled oyster crackers were distributed for sale in 24 states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

What stores sold the recalled products?

The oyster crackers were sold at three retailers, all under house brand names:

  • Market Pantry Soup & Oyster Crackers at Target
  • Great Value Soup & Oyster Crackers at Walmart
  • Giant Eagle Oyster Crackers at Giant Eagle

The recall also affects Vista Soup & Oyster Crackers, which are typically sold directly to restaurants.

How do I know if I have a recalled product?

The oyster crackers were shipped in 9- or 12-ounce boxes that contained 12 individually wrapped plastic bags.

To see if you have a recalled product, check your bag for the following information:

  • Market Pantry Soup & Oyster Crackers
    • Size: 9 ounces
    • UPC: 085239114933
    • Sell By Date: 23 May 2025
  • Great Value Soup & Oyster Crackers
    • Size: 9 ounces
    • UPC: 078742085494
    • Sell By Date: 23 May 2025
  • Giant Eagle Oyster Crackers

  • VISTA Soup & Oyster Crackers
    • Size: 12 ounces
    • UPC: 045100008006
    • Sell By Date: 24 May 2025

What should I do next?

If you have a box of recalled oyster crackers, do not eat them, even if they do not appear to be contaminated. You can throw them out or bring them back to the store you purchased them from for a refund.

99-Year-Old Dick Van Dyke Eats This Surprising Food Combo Every Day https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/what-does-dick-van-dyke-eat/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 18:03:48 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2122137 There's one fruit and one dessert that Dick Van Dyke credits for his longevity.

The post 99-Year-Old Dick Van Dyke Eats This Surprising Food Combo Every Day appeared first on Taste Recipes.

It’s no secret that we all share a slight obsession with wanting to know the habits that contribute to celebrities living such long lives. Bob Barker was a vegetarian, while Betty White loved her daily hot dog and vodka martini combo. It’s safe to say that there are a variety of lifestyles that allow people to live to nearly 100!

Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is currently 99. He credits his longevity to many things, but more specifically, it comes down to two things that he eats every day. One of them makes sense, and the other may surprise you!

What does Dick Van Dyke eat every day?

A lot of celebrities are creatures of habit, which makes sense with their busy schedules. Some of them eat the same thing every day, like Willie Nelson and Kate Middleton, who happen to enjoy the same breakfast staple. But Dick Van Dyke’s daily diet includes something versatile and easily snackable: blueberries.

The little blue fruit is known to be quite an antioxidant powerhouse, and that’s supposedly why Van Dyke loves to eat them. He’s definitely more health-conscious now than he was in his youth; he quit smoking and drinking and only eats meat about once a week. And while blueberries are a staple for him, it’s a different habit that he really credits his youthfulness to…drumroll, please.

What does he credit his longevity to?

It’s not the blueberries. It’s not even the gym! He believes in the healing power of ice cream. More specifically, a pint of vanilla Häagen-Dazs ice cream topped with chocolate syrup, which he eats every night before bed. Yes, really, every night! Apparently, being young at heart is an important aspect of aging gracefully, so go ahead and ask for that dessert menu!

You’ll Never Believe What Giada de Laurentiis Puts in Her Oatmeal https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/giada-de-laurentiis-oatmeal-with-olive-oil/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 17:43:38 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2123607 Oatmeal is nothing special. Unless you're Giada De Laurentiis, of course.

The post You’ll Never Believe What Giada de Laurentiis Puts in Her Oatmeal appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Giada de Laurentiis has made a name for herself by creating simple, easy-to-prepare Italian meals. She doesn’t tend to rely on a lot of overly complicated ingredients. Her famous lemon spaghetti only has four ingredients! Giada’s accessible approach to cooking is why so many people love trying her recipes.

All of that is to say that I trust Giada’s advice when it comes to cooking. But I have to admit, this latest development has me questioning everything. Giada recently turned a viral wellness trend into an oatmeal ingredient, and I gotta say, it’s a bold choice.

What ingredient does Giada put in her oatmeal?

Lately, wellness influencers on Instagram swear by the health benefits of extra-virgin olive oil—when taken as a shot of oil on an empty stomach in the morning. I have to imagine shot glasses that read “But first, olive oil” probably won’t catch on quite like their coffee mug brethren, but to each their own.

In an Instagram video, Giada says that sure, there can be health benefits associated with olive oil. But, in her opinion, you don’t need to throw it back like tequila. Instead, she says that she incorporates olive oil into her diet by drizzling it over oatmeal. She also says that olive oil is good with buckwheat cereal (Giada, please!) or on toast (OK, I agree with this one).

Oatmeal is such a popular breakfast choice that people like Willie Nelson and Kate Middleton start their day with a bowl. If you’re intrigued by the idea of a savory oatmeal loaded with olive oil, go ahead and test this one.

But if, like me, your brain can only conceive of sweet oatmeals, you might want to try a different savory breakfast for your morning olive oil fix. This could be as simple as scrambled eggs or a breakfast bowl. And hey, maybe olive oil is strictly a “brunch or later” ingredient for you, and that’s OK, too!

If you made a Trader Joe’s run lately, check your groceries for 750ml sparkling water bottles from the brand Gerolsteiner. The retailer recently issued a recall for the water in a dozen states. The bottles may be cracked or damaged, posing a risk of injury.

What caused the recall?

The recall affects about 61,500 bottles of water. They were sold individually and in cases of 15. The water bottles were recalled over a manufacturing error that could cause them to crack. Since they’re glass, this could pose a laceration risk.

What states are affected by the recall?

The recalled Gerolsteiner water bottles were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas from December 2024 through January 2025.

How do I know if I have a recalled product?

To see if you have a recalled product, check the bottom of the label for the lot number. Recalled products will display lot number 11/28/2024 L or 11/27/2024 L

What should I do next?

If you have a bottle of recalled Gerolsteiner water, do not consume it, even if it does not appear to be cracked or otherwise pose a risk. Carefully dispose of the product, or return it to Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

I’m a ’90s kid, and I know Pillsbury for one very specific mix: Funfetti. I’m not kidding, it’s the only thing my friends and classmates ever wanted for birthday parties, and honestly, it’s as amazing today as it was when I was eight.

I get nostalgic just looking at a slice because Funfetti is as delicious as it is colorful. It’s the best confetti cake mix for a reason!

Pillsbury has kept it classic for a while, but recently, the brand posted some intriguing Funfetti images on its Instagram. Now, they’ve officially come out with a brand-new Funfetti mix, and we can’t wait to start baking.

What is the new Funfetti cake mix?

It’s everything you know and love about Funfetti with a crunchy, colorful twist—loads and loads of sprinkles. Funfetti has decided to follow the sprinkle cake trend and officially gift us with mountains of sprinkles to decorate our cakes. You’ll find stars, pearls, rainbow and sequin sprinkles inside. As if Funfetti wasn’t already the prettiest cake on the market.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Funfetti (@funfetti)

Named Funfetti Celebrations, this cake mix is truly the birthday cake of your dreams. Same tasty vanilla cake with hints of color inside with a flashy new outside. Pillsbury saw the fun sprinkle cakes hitting the internet and the not-so-fun price tag. They wanted to give people the option to create a sprinkle cake all their own at a fraction of the price. We love you, Pillsbury!

The only thing missing from the box is the frosting, but that’s an easy fix. Head further down the aisle for a good store-bought frosting.

Where do I find it?

Funfetti Celebrations is currently only available at Walmart (along with the regular Funfetti mix), but should hit other retailers soon. Make sure to grab a box for your next birthday. You’re never too old to celebrate with style.

  1. Preheat oven to 325°. In a small bowl, combine almond flour and sugar substitute; stir in butter. Press onto the bottom and up the side of a greased 9-in. springform pan. Place on a baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned, 18-22 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
  2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, sour cream, sugar substitute, lemon juice and vanilla until smooth. Add eggs; beat on low speed just until combined. Pour into crust. Place pan on a double thickness of heavy-duty foil (about 18-in. square). Securely wrap foil around pan.
  3. Place in a larger baking pan; add 1 in. hot water to larger pan. Bake until center is just set and top appears dull, about 1-1/2 hours. Turn oven off; let sit 30 minutes with the door open. Remove springform pan from water bath. Let stand up to 1 hour on a wire rack.
  4. Refrigerate overnight, covering when completely cooled. Remove rim from pan before serving.

Blazin chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

21. Blazin’ Knockout

This, the hottest wing on the Buffalo Wild Wings menu, is explicitly designed to murder you, not to be enjoyed. This is something you order in attempt to show off in front of your friends, only to fail miserably, spending the remainder of your time together suffering in silence while refusing milk or any offers of help because you’re “totally fine.”

Desert Heat Dry Rub chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

20. Desert Heat Dry Rub

Buffalo Wild Wings offers five different sauce-less wings, and the Desert Heat Dry Rub is supposed to be the spiciest of the lot. But they’re not really all that spicy, and they’re not that remarkable either. There are much better dry rubs on the BWW menu for people who want to keep their fingers and faces clean.

Wild chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

19. Wild

Not quite as hot as the Blazin’ Knockout, but still hot enough to barely be enjoyable. And I’m someone who can handle heat! However, too much heat drowns out the flavor of everything else, and if that’s the case, why bother eating wings at all? Why not just pour hot sauce directly on your tongue and call it a day?

Honey Bbq chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

18. Teriyaki, Sweet BBQ and Honey BBQ

I’m lumping these three wings together because they all generate the same emotional response, which is “meh.” These are such generic sauces, you probably have all three in your fridge right now. These are the sorts of flavors that are fine for a backyard barbecue or quick air-fried dinner, but if you’re bothering to go out to a restaurant, do better than something you can easily make at home.

Orange Chicken chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

17. Orange Chicken

After eating these wings, I realized how essential it is to eat takeout orange chicken with white rice, since the starch helps offset the sweetness that sticks on your tongue. Without it, these wings stop being fun after a couple bites. They’re a good choice if you order a range of wings to share, but not for rolling solo.

Buffalo Dry Rub chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

16. Buffalo Dry Rub

I’m pretty sure the only reason these exist is so you can eat Buffalo wings on a date without getting bright red sauce all over your face or messing up your lipstick, and I love that. I had never considered Buffalo Wild Wings as a place of romance before, but now, thanks to this wing, I do. But outside of that, there’s no reason to order these over the many other, better Buffalo-flavored wings on the menu.

Thai Curry chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

15. Thai Curry

A respectable effort! And maybe something fun to get if you’ve got a crowd together and want to get a whole slew of wings from across the flavor spectrum. While this isn’t the most remarkable fried curry chicken I’ve ever tasted, I suppose it makes Buffalo Wild Wings a good spot when you’re in the mood for Thai, but your kids refuse to go to any sort of restaurant that doesn’t have mozzarella sticks on the menu. (Remember: They’ll move out one day, and you’ll be able to eat whatever you want again. Hang in there!)

Chipotle BBQ dry rub wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

14. Chipotle BBQ Dry Rub

These chicken wings taste like barbecue potato chips, which is a thing I didn’t even realize I needed until Buffalo Wild Wings gave it to me. Even though dry rubs are, by nature, designed to leave less mess than sauce, these are better when they’re dipped in way too much ranch to be socially acceptable.

Hot chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

13. Hot

These are the third spiciest wings on the Buffalo Wild Wings menu and the only ones that succeed in bringing the pain while also delivering flavors besides fire. You can still taste the sharp tang of vinegar before the heat creeps in, which is just as important as feeling the burn. Good job, BWW.

Mild chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

12. Medium and Mild

To my fire-tolerant palate, there wasn’t much of a noticeable difference between these two wings. You’ll probably be able to tell if you’re spice-sensitive, but you won’t lose or gain anything flavorwise by opting for one or the other. They’re good, but in a field of over 20 sauces, they’re also pretty boring. But maybe you like boring. You do you.

Mango Habanero chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

11. Mango Habanero

I have been metaphorically burnt by so many bad mango habanero wings in the past that I’d all but given up on them, but these wings made me a believer again. They’re sweet without being too sweet, with a legitimate kick that will make you remember why this fruity flavor combo works so well in the first place. I’m proud of them.

Lemon Pepper chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

10. Lemon Pepper

There are two lemon pepper wings on the menu: one with dry rub and one with sauce. And the one with dry rub is better, which is why this wing is all the way down here. It’s still good, though; I’m not mad at it.

Asian Zing chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

9. Asian Zing

This sauce takes a lot of its flavor cues from Southeast Asia, balancing soy sauce saltiness, fish sauce savoriness and sugary sweetness with Thai chile fire. As someone who loves all these things, I liked these wings, and you will, too.

Caribbean Jerk chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

8. Caribbean Jerk

Don’t worry about burning your face off with Scotch bonnets. Buffalo Wild Wing’s take on jerk sauce leans more on spice than spicy, with lots of warm notes of clove and allspice. These are also excellent when eaten cold in front of an open fridge at 2 a.m., in case you want to order a few extra to take home.

Nashville Hot chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

7. Nashville Hot

These wings would have been rated higher if they came with more pickles, which, in my professional opinion, are a critical component when eating Nashville hot chicken. Tip from a legitimate expert: Wrap one around your wing before you take a bite, so you get a spritz of something sour while your tongue gets punched with spice.

Parmesan Garlic chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

6. Parmesan Garlic

Though I love Parmesan and garlic, they’ve never really endeared themselves to me on chicken wings. Then I was told by the incredibly wise manager of the Buffalo Wild Wings that I should order them boneless with a side of marinara to make bite-sized chicken Parm. In doing so, I changed my life forever. (She also recommended ordering cheese curds, if you want to get really crazy. This woman is truly a genius.)

Lemon Pepper Dry Rub chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

5. Lemon Pepper Dry Rub

What makes lemon pepper dry rub better than its sauced counterpart? Enough lemon flavor to make your ears perk up. Though they’re not so tart your mouth will pucker, they are aggressively lemony and lovely at that.

Jammin Jalapeno chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

4. Jammin’ Jalapeno

Simply put: This wing is great. No complaints from me. Had I not been conducting this very serious taste test, I probably wouldn’t have ordered them, because they don’t pop out as the most compelling option on a menu with so many choices. But my gorgeous, intelligent and incredibly sexy editor bestowed this assignment upon me, thus thrusting this wing into my life, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Original Buffalo chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

3. Original Buffalo

The original recipe for Buffalo wings hits just as heavy with butter as it does with hot sauce. I’ve eaten my way around Buffalo (as one does as a chicken wing professional), and while these aren’t quite as good as the ones from Mr. Goodbar, Kelly’s Korner or the Anchor Bar, they’re as close as I’ve ever had from a chain, and the best Buffalo-style wing on the entire menu. Everything really is better with butter!

Spicy Garlic chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

2. Spicy Garlic

Garlic is one of my absolute favorite things on earth, so I’m incredibly biased when it comes to judging this wing. This sauce needs equilibrium to work (too spicy, you won’t taste the garlic; too garlicky, the spice becomes pointless), and it achieves the right balance. These have obviously been touched by the hand of some of the world’s most brilliant wing scientists, and it shows.

Salt And Vinegar chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings

1. Salt & Vinegar Dry Rub

Salt and powdered vinegar can make it impossible to taste the potato when doused on chips. They still pack a punch on wings, but don’t take over the whole game, and it’s wonderful. As tasty as the best Buffalo Wild Wings sauces are, they’re so flavorful you can’t often taste the actual chicken. Meanwhile, this simple rub adds flavor without covering everything else up. If you also think the best part of a roast chicken is the crispy, savory skin, this will become your new favorite wing, too.

This Indulgent Sandwich Was One of Queen Elizabeth’s Favorites https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/queen-elizabeth-croque-monsieur/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 22:33:07 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2121628 Her Majesty’s taste in food was classic—but this preference is surprising.

Queen Elizabeth had pretty well-known likes and dislikes when it came to food. Perhaps most famously (at least for me) was her aversion to garlic, which she forbade from meals at the palace. Who knows, maybe she wanted to make sure her breath was fresh as she carried out her royal duties.

But there are a lot of foods that Queen Elizabeth loved to eat, like scrambled eggs and scones with jam. Queen Elizabeth’s favorite sandwich, though, wasn’t something she ate every day. It was a special treat that she requested when she wanted something fancy.

What sandwich did the queen love?

You’d think Queen Elizabeth would prefer a dainty cucumber sandwich to nibble on with a cup of tea. But her actual favorite sandwich was a real treat.

According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the Queen loved a croque monsieur! This simple but indulgent sandwich is a mainstay at cafés around France. It’s typically served alongside a small mixed green salad topped with a balsamic vinaigrette.

What is a croque monsieur?

“Indulgent” is certainly the best way to describe this sandwich. I would also argue that “hangover cure” is another way, although, of course, I’m only speaking for myself here, and not Queen Elizabeth.

This is essentially a fancy grilled ham and cheese sandwich. You layer bechamel sauce onto bread, add layers of ham and gruyere cheese, and then bake it to perfection. The pièce de résistance is topping the sandwich off with more bechamel sauce and shredded cheese, then broiling it until it’s nice, bubbly and golden brown. (In French, the “croque” in croque monsieur means “to bite” or “to crunch,” which makes sense.)

There’s also a version of this sandwich called a croque madame, which has all of the same ingredients plus a fried egg. Like I said, it’s decadent.

One of the most beloved items at Trader Joe’s inspired a brand-new beer—and it’s expected to appear in stores this week.

On the latest Inside Trader Joe’s podcast epsiode, the chain revealed a new Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter in collaboration with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.

What is the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter?

Hardywood is a Virginia-based craft brewer. TJ’s has previously partnered with them on other treat-inspired releases, like its Speculoos Cookie Butter Beer and Joe-Joe’s Chocolate Vanilla Creme Stout.

On Inside Trader Joe’s, VP of marketing Tara Miller says the new porter is an “homage” to Trader Joe’s incredibly popular Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups.

Matt Sloan, the company’s “culture and innovation guy,” described the porter as “bold” and “intense” with an ABV of 9.2%. It has notes of chocolate, a bit of coffee and—of course—peanut butter. The beer, he added, is more of a dessert drink than something you’d enjoy with dinner.

The new beer has reportedly been a hit with those who have had a taste. And how can it not be when alcohol is one of the things you should always buy at TJ’s! During a tasting panel, “the whole group’s hands shot up in yes votes almost immediately,” Miller said on the podcast.

“It does taste as good as it sounds,” she added. We’ll ring the bell for that!

How long will it be at Trader Joe’s?

Like any other seasonal Trader Joe’s offering, it’s difficult to predict exactly how long the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter will be available in stores. If you want a taste, you should try to stop in sooner rather than later. But, given that the porter is part of the chain’s spring lineup, we hope that it will stick around for at least a couple months.

Kit Kats are some of the most well-rounded candies in existence. They’re chocolatey and crunchy and offer an oh-so-satisfying snap. As a kid, I always dug into Kit Kats before anything else in my Halloween candy bag, and I know I’m not the only one. It almost seems impossible to improve this perfect candy—but that was before I learned about Japanese Kit Kat flavors.

Yes, that’s right. There are dozens of global Kit Kat flavors that go way beyond what you can find stateside. So naturally, when I came across a 50-piece box stuffed with six of Japan’s most popular flavors, I just had to try it. Here’s what I thought after enjoying the Japanese Kit Kat sampler.

Japanese Kit Kat Sampler

Stuffed with 50 Kit Kats in six different flavors, the Japanese Kit Kat sampler is ideal for the sweet tooth or jet setter.

What is the Japanese Kit Kat sampler?

The Japanese Kit Kat sampler is a small box containing six different Japanese Kit Kat flavors for a whopping total of 50 pieces. Flavors are regional to Japan and include original, milk tea, matcha, orange chocolate, dark chocolate and kohaku—a milk and white chocolate combo.

Upon arrival, I was impressed with the sampler’s packaging, which features traditional Japanese iconography and lots of color. Apart from the fun print, the box is much smaller than I expected. Once opened, however, I was blown away by the contents. Underneath a printout of nutrition information is a treasure trove of my most coveted treat!

Japanese Kit Kat Flavors Review

There are six flavors featured in the Japanese Kit Kat sampler:

  • Original: No surprise here— the Japanese version of an original Kit Kat is the same wafer-filled milk chocolate we know and love. The ingredients in the Japanese version do differ slightly from the American candy, though.
  • Milk Tea: The milk tea Kit Kat is my new favorite. It offers a delightful, milky-sweet flavor with a slight touch of black tea. White chocolate gives it a lighter flavor, and, like the original, the wafers offer a rich and satisfying crunch.
  • Matcha: The matcha Kit Kat channels the bitter bite of matcha green tea. The chocolate itself is a green color, which I found fun. As a matcha fan, I’m surprised that the initial bitter flavor perfectly mimics the traditional drink.
  • Orange Chocolate: Terry’s chocolate oranges are some of my favorite confections, and the taste of this orange chocolate Kit Kat is quite similar to the fruit-shaped treat. The hit of citrus contrasts well with the milk chocolate, and the fragrance is absolutely intoxicating.
  • Dark Chocolate: The dark chocolate Kit Kat comes in a black wrapper emblazoned with white writing. While dark in color, the chocolate is still creamy and brown rather than almost black, which means it leans a bit more sweet than bitter. Personally, that’s a trait I prefer.
  • Kohaku: The final flavor, inspired by the traditional Japanese concept of “kohaku,” symbolizes red and white with its packaging. The kohaku Kit Kat bar offers primarily white chocolate, but it also boasts a milk chocolate base. This makes it a fun twist on the traditional milk chocolate candy.

Final Verdict

This Japanese Kit Kat sampler is perfect for parties, gifts and—of course—snacking. Overall, I found the flavors true to life. While it was a bit disappointing to receive standard milk and dark chocolate versions similar to what you can find in the U.S., I did enjoy trying new-to-me flavors. The tea options were particularly delicious. Plus, the packaging gives you a taste of another culture, just like some of our favorite snack subscriptions.

Japanese Kit Kat Sampler

Need a gift for a sweet tooth or traveler? This Japanese Kit Kat Sampler is pricey but so fun to explore.

Is your mouth watering yet? You can snag this genius 50-piece Japanese Kit Kat sampler on Amazon or Bokksu Market. It retails for between $50 and $60. While a bit pricey, it’s the easiest and most cost-effective way to enjoy multiple Japanese Kit Kat flavors without having to buy a bag of each—or planning a trip!

That said, Bokksu Market also offers individual bags of Japanese Kit Kats. Prices run the gamut, depending on the size, flavor and number of candies included. You can also snag flavors not included in the box, such as double-layer green tea, strawberry and white chocolate.

How to Make Chocolate Bunny Cocktails for a Sweet Easter Drink https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/chocolate-bunny-cocktails/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/chocolate-bunny-cocktails/#respond Thu, 13 Mar 2025 13:58:12 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2121802 This Easter, serve the cutest sippers ever—chocolate bunny cocktails! A whole chocolate rabbit holds a sweet, creamy drink inside.

The post How to Make Chocolate Bunny Cocktails for a Sweet Easter Drink appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Chocolate bunny cocktails are a fun and creative way to turn ordinary chocolate rabbits into adorable, edible cups. While many Easter cocktails focus on springtime fruit flavors, chocolate bunny cocktails are all about sweet and creamy ingredients like chocolate liqueur, Irish cream and Kahlua. You can even use chocolate bunnies to serve kids’ drinks like chocolate milk!

How to Serve Drinks in Chocolate Bunnies

Anyone can turn a chocolate bunny into a chocolate bunny cup. Choose a hollow chocolate rabbit, then use a warm knife to carefully slice off the ears. The edible cup will add chocolate flavor to the drink, so it’s important to choose a cocktail that pairs well with it—like one of my favorites, a classic mudslide. The rich Irish cream and coffee liqueur in this drink are perfect to serve in a milk chocolate cup. And there are more sweet and creamy drink ideas below.

Choosing the Right Chocolate Bunny

You’ll want a high-quality chocolate bunny, of course. Our Test Kitchen had the enviable task of tracking down all the best-tasting chocolate bunny brands, and found three that stood above the rest. To turn it into a cup, your chocolate bunny also needs to be structurally sound.

Choose a hollow bunny with chocolate walls thick enough to hold the drink without leaking, and strong enough to slice through without breaking. The bottom of the rabbit needs to be perfectly flat so that it can stand up on its own when filled. Finally, look for a chocolate bunny that has a wide, rather than narrow base, so that it’s less prone to tipping when filled. For my bunny drinks, I chose Russell-Stover’s 6-ounce hollow bunnies, which have plenty of room inside for the cocktail, and are strong and sturdy.

Ingredients

  • Chocolate bunny: Choose a hollow chocolate rabbit with upright ears that can stand up on its own. It should be large enough to hold about 6 ounces (3/4 cup) of liquid.
  • Irish cream: To make a creamy mudslide cocktail, pick up a bottle of silky-sweet Irish cream. Or, use your own Irish cream made with or without alcohol.
  • Kahlua: The sweet coffee flavor of store-bought or homemade Kahlua is delectable with Irish cream and chocolate.
  • Vodka: Using the best vodka (like Tito’s) will make your bunny cocktail taste like a true mixologist made it.
  • Cream: Give the drink an extra-creamy finish with either cold heavy whipping cream or cold half-and-half.
  • Garnishes: Pick up colorful paper straws for sipping your bunny cocktail. Optional decorations include dollops of whipped cream, ribbons in Easter pastel shades or fresh garnishes (try edible flowers or chocolate peppermint leaves).

Directions

Step 1: Cut off the chocolate bunny ears

Lay the chocolate bunny on a cutting board. Run a sharp kitchen knife under very hot water until the blade is warm, then dry it off. Hold the bunny with one hand and use the other to slice off the ears with the hot knife—do this slowly, using very gentle pressure while drawing the blade back and forth through the chocolate until it slices through. Be careful not to press too hard, or the chocolate walls could break and collapse.

Editor’s Tip: Check for potential leaks! Once the ears have been removed, hold the bottom of the rabbit up to the light and look inside—if light shines through any cracks or holes, brush some melted chocolate on the outside to patch them. Allow the chocolate to dry.

Step 2: Prep the cocktail

Pour 1-1/2 ounces each of Irish cream, Kahlua and heavy cream into a cocktail shaker. Add in 1 ounce of vodka. Add ice, cover and shake the ingredients until they’re completely chilled.

Step 3: Fill the bunny and serve

Stand the chocolate bunny up and carefully strain the chilled drink into it.

Add a straw, along with optional garnishes like whipped cream around the top (and on the backside to make a bunny tail!). Ribbons, edible flowers or mint leaves would be cute too. Serve the bunny cocktail immediately.

Chocolate Bunny Cocktail Variations

  • Make it a sweet martini: The coffee flavor of an espresso martini is delicious with a chocolate bunny, as is a double chocolate martini made with two chocolate liqueurs. A tiramisu martini adds tropical, creamy RumChata. Or, use Irish cream and amaretto to make a sugar cookie martini.
  • Try a brandy Alexander bunny: Pour an old-fashioned but delicious cocktail into your chocolate rabbit. A brandy Alexander is made with crème de cacao, sweet brandy and a little nutmeg.
  • Serve a chocolate bunny aperitif: Instead of a cocktail, serve a straight shot of creamy liqueur in a smaller hollow bunny. Try Irish cream, Kahlua, Amarula or bourbon cream.
  • Make a nonalcoholic version: For an alcohol-free celebration or to make the recipe kid-friendly, serve drinks like chocolate milk or coffee milk inside a chocolate bunny. Or, fill a bunny with a frosty treat—like a strawberry milkshake, thin mint milkshake or peanut butter milkshake. (Blend extra milk into the shakes to make them pourable.)
  • Go with white chocolate: For an even sweeter cocktail, use a hollow white chocolate rabbit.

Tips for Making Chocolate Bunny Cocktails

Can chocolate bunny cocktails be made in advance?

Yes, the components of chocolate bunny cocktails can be prepped ahead of time. Slice the ears off the chocolate rabbits, then place the bunny cups inside a sealed container or food storage bag to keep them fresh. Store them at room temperature. You can also mix the cocktail ingredients together and store the mixture in the fridge for up to three days. Wait to add the cocktail to the chocolate bunny until just before serving it.

What’s the best way to cut a chocolate bunny for chocolate bunny cocktails?

For the easiest cut, your chocolate rabbit should have ears pointing straight up. I like to slice the ears off just above the head, but you can also slice further up to leave some of the ears intact. Finally, a slightly angled cut looks better than cutting straight across. Just remember to use a hot, dry knife and take your time so the chocolate doesn’t break. And if cutting the ears off chocolate bunnies seems like too much work, try a cottontail margarita instead!

How do you make a chocolate bunny cocktail without making a mess?

Depending on the hollow chocolate bunny you use, the opening to pour in the cocktail may be generous or narrow. To avoid spills or drips down the outside, use a funnel to pour the drink into the chocolate rabbit. Also, before adding the drink, remember to check the chocolate bunny for holes or cracks, and patch them with melted chocolate. Keep a napkin handy, as the chocolate may melt a little from the warmth of your hands as you hold it.

The Property Brothers Love Making This Simple British Recipe https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/property-brothers-yorkshire-pudding/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 22:30:45 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2121626 Drew and Jonathan Scott can renovate a kitchen and make you something to eat.

The post The Property Brothers Love Making This Simple British Recipe appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
Drew Scott and Jonathan Scott have been home improvement mainstays for nearly 15 years. Their very first show, aptly named The Property Brothers, debuted on HGTV in 2011 and made them household names. The formula is simple: Drew is a realtor, Jonathan is a contractor and together, they make home dreams come true.

When he’s not in the middle of a major renovation, Jonathan Scott is a serious cook. And though it might be a point of contention, he says he’s a better cook than Drew. “My meals tend to have more flavor—but, admittedly, they may not be as healthy,” he told HGTV Magazine.

There is one recipe in particular that Jonathan loves to make, and he’s been perfecting it for decades.

What’s Jonathan’s nostalgic recipe?

As it turns out, the last name “Scott” is a pretty literal reference to the family’s Scottish origins. And there is one classic British recipe that both Drew and Jonathan grew up eating: Yorkshire pudding.

Yorkshire pudding may sound like a dessert, but it’s actually a savory souffle. You can serve this light, crispy side with your choice of meat for a hearty meal.

Apparently, Jonathan started making his own version of Yorkshire pudding in college, so he’s had plenty of time to perfect his technique. “There’s that mix of timing, getting it to rise and then taking it out, since it continues to cook when it’s out of the oven,” he explained to Delish. “Sometimes I put a little bacon in it for flavor.”

What other food do the Property Brothers like?

While Yorkshire pudding may be Jonathan’s go-to recipe, it’s a bit fancier than the food he and Drew eat regularly. They’re big fans of lighter meals, like a soup and sandwich combo for lunch, or a protein smoothie for breakfast. Jonathan loves snacking on chocolate-covered almonds, and Drew is a big pistachio fan.

While their preferences differ on most food items, there is at least one thing they agree on: sushi. Jonathan says he eats it at least twice a week. Talk about goals!

This Was Julia Child’s Favorite Cocktail and I Totally See Why https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/upside-down-martini-julia-child/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/upside-down-martini-julia-child/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 21:50:34 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2122226 The legendary chef's go-to drink—the upside-down martini—has converted me, a martini skeptic.

The post This Was Julia Child’s Favorite Cocktail and I Totally See Why appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
I must confess something: I’ve never been much of a martini fan.

Over the years, I have tried countless variations on the classic martini, but this drink never secured a place in my rotation of regular orders. Now, a tip from the late, great Julia Child has me rethinking everything I thought I knew about how to order a martini.

I recently learned that Julia’s favorite cocktail was something called an “upside-down martini,” a more vermouth-forward variation on the classic recipe. According to Culinary Historians of Chicago, Julia once said it was her favorite cocktail because it was so light “you could have two of them.”

What is an ‘upside-down martini’?

The upside-down martini, aka the reverse martini, calls for five parts of extra-dry vermouth (Noilly Prat preferred) to one part gin. This cocktail reverses the recipe for a classic martini.

Garnished with a lemon peel twist, the upside-down martini is a refreshing sipper worthy of a summer happy hour spent gossiping with friends. And Julia is correct: The surprisingly complex but not overbearing flavor will have you asking for another. No wonder this drink had culinary royalty ordering another round!

How do you order an ‘upside-down martini’?

If you’re ordering Julia’s drink from your regular bartender, you’ll want to share a couple of things that make this drink so unique. First, the martini calls for gin, not vodka. In place of sweet vermouth, be sure they use dry vermouth. And if you’re looking to be a purist, the drink needs a lemon peel garnish.

The bartender should also do plenty of shaking to get the martini nice and cold—this one wouldn’t hit the same if it was anything close to room temperature.

With my curiosity piqued, I knew I needed a taste of Julia’s drink myself. My neighborhood bar did not have any vermouth (dry or otherwise) on hand, so I picked up a bottle of Noilly Prat from the store and fixed the drink up at home.

The result lived up to the hype—and with barely three ingredients to it, this is an easy one to whip up at home using the gin of your choice. And, yes, you’ll want to have two.

This Is the One Side Dish That Ina Garten Makes on Repeat https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/ina-garten-favorite-side-dish/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 21:27:21 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2121225 This simple salad recipe has the Barefoot Contessa's stamp of approval.

The post This Is the One Side Dish That Ina Garten Makes on Repeat appeared first on Taste Recipes.

If there is one constant to rely on in this world, it’s Ina Garten. The Barefoot Contessa will always serve up a heaping dose of comfort when she comes across my social media feed. Her Instagram presence really is a joy, and I love watching bite-sized episodes (pun intended) on my phone.

She recently posted a video of herself making a very specific kind of salad and said that it’s her favorite side dish ever. That’s a huge proclamation from the queen of the kitchen! She’s been sharing favorites a lot lately because she also said that this simple dessert is her all-time favorite recipe. OK Ina, twist my arm. I’ll try all of your favorite foods!

What is Ina Garten’s favorite side dish?

The lucky dish is none other than a farro salad from a restaurant in New York called Charlie Bird. Apparently, one of Ina’s friends made her the salad, which was so good that she demanded he share the recipe.

In her Instagram video where she makes the salad, Ina notes that she really loves a dish that can “go with anything, lamb, chicken, fish, whatever.” This farro salad is a perfectly versatile accompaniment to anything you’re cooking up, whether it’s Ina’s pork tenderloin or her pot roast. The best part? It comes together pretty quickly, too.

How do you make Ina’s farro salad?

This particular farro salad is special, and not just because it’s been awarded a badge of honor from Ina. She cooks the farro in apple cider to really give the earthy grain a hit of sweetness. She also makes sure to dress it with a lemon vinaigrette while it’s still warm so all the flavors have time to meld.

Ina adds a few more ingredients to complete this dish. First up, some fresh herbs—she roughly chops both parsley and mint to make sure their flavor really comes through. There are also sliced cherry tomatoes, pistachios and radishes in this salad. Finally, she adds in a few handfuls of arugula for that signature peppery flavor and tops off the whole thing with some shaved Parmesan. Bon appétit!

The ‘Ted Danson Sandwich’ Is a Twist on a Classic Deli Staple https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/ted-danson-sandwich/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/ted-danson-sandwich/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 19:35:13 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2123245 If you're a fan of a good deli sandwich or Curb Your Enthusiasm, you don't want to miss out on the Ted Danson sandwich.

The post The ‘Ted Danson Sandwich’ Is a Twist on a Classic Deli Staple appeared first on Taste Recipes.

On the beloved, long-running show Curb Your Enthusiasm, star Larry David takes food seriously. In one episode, the conflict centers on Leo’s Deli, which is Larry’s lunch spot. Leo’s honors him by adding a “Larry David” sandwich to the menu. Ted Danson—former Cheers actor, frequent Curb guest star and Larry’s frenemy—also has a sandwich on the menu. The only problem? Ted’s sandwich sounds much, much better than Larry’s.

The episode’s plot centers on Larry’s attempt to swap eponymous sandwiches, but you don’t have to be a Curb Your Enthusiasm fan to know that the Ted Danson sandwich sounds delicious.

What is the ‘Ted Danson’?

“My sandwich is turkey, coleslaw, Russian dressing, it’s a classic,” Ted says. It’s a bit like a Reuben, but with lighter, sweeter turkey rather than corned beef, and fresh, zippy coleslaw rather than sauerkraut. In fact, the Ted Danson sounds a lot like the Rachel, a deli sandwich made with turkey, Swiss, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing.

What separates a decent sandwich from a great sandwich? In my humble opinion, there are three criteria for greatness: contrast, texture and taste. The Ted Danson sandwich ticks all three boxes.

Contrast? You bet: The pickled coleslaw brightens up the sweet, mild turkey. Texture? Triple check! This sandwich is made on crispy toasted rye with crunchy cabbage and tender turkey. And last, flavor. That’s a no-brainer. Like our favorite variations on the Reuben, the Ted Danson layers savory, sweet, acidic and rich flavors, not to mention the zesty seasonings in the Russian dressing, so every single bite is a bit different—and very interesting.

What’s on the ‘Larry David’?

The Larry David sandwich is made with whitefish, smoked sable, capers, red onion and cream cheese. In short, we can’t really blame Larry for wanting to swap his sandwich with Ted’s! Next time you’re hungry for lunch, give the ‘Ted Danson’ a try.

The McDonald’s Bagel Sandwich Was, Is and Always Will Be Breakfast Royalty https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/mcdonalds-steak-egg-and-cheese-bagel/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/mcdonalds-steak-egg-and-cheese-bagel/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 19:02:39 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2123174 Who would choose anything else when they could order the McDonald's Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel?

The post The McDonald’s Bagel Sandwich Was, Is and Always Will Be Breakfast Royalty appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
McDonald’s celebrated 50 years of breakfast by bringing its iconic bagel sandwich to all 50 states. This news shook me to my core—I had no idea that some Americans had yet to experience the McDonald’s Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel. Though you are all strangers to me, I am overcome with joy for each and every one of you.

I’m the country’s leading fast-food critic (according to my editor), and as such, I’m well-acquainted with the chain restaurant landscape. I hold unreasonably strong opinions about all fast-food burgers. And while McDonald’s may be most famous for its Big Mac and Quarter Pounder, the Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel is low-key the best sandwich on the entire menu.

What’s so great about McDonald’s Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel?

The breakfast menu actually has three bagel sandwiches, the others being Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Sausage, Egg & Cheese. But McDonald’s Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel is something truly special. It’s preposterously indulgent. This is not a healthy McDonald’s breakfast by any means, nor is it something to be eaten casually. This is a sammie that you order when you need a morning meal.

The bagel is not great, and that’s fantastic. I grew up in New York City, so bagels are another food group I take seriously. And if McDonald’s used a serious bagel in this situation, the sandwich wouldn’t be as good. This bagel is too dense and chewy to be enjoyable with cream cheese, but as the base of something marvelously greasy, it couldn’t be more perfect. It sucks up all the errant juices and flavors from the fillings without losing structural integrity.

As for those fillings, there’s a fluffy folded egg topped with a slice of melted American cheese and sweet roasted onions. Then there’s a steak burger patty, which is exclusive to breakfast for reasons unknown. It’s far better than the beef patties used on the Big Macs or McDoubles (which are small and have a tendency to dry out), with enough moisture to balance out the egg.

A simple sandwich becomes sublime if all its elements work in perfect unison, and that’s exactly what the McDonald’s Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel achieves.

While I think this breakfast sandwich is perfect on its own, it can be brought to higher levels of wonderment with the addition of McNugget sauces. I’m partial to Buffalo, but McDonald’s Tangy Barbecue Sauce is also a strong option. It’s essential to request extra napkins, as this sandwich will definitely leave your hands greasy, the way good fast food should.

Just remember: Even if McDonald’s Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel is the best sandwich on the menu, it’s only available for breakfast, so get there before 11 a.m.

9 Secrets to Getting a Perfect Bakery-Style Muffin Every Time https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/bakery-style-muffin-tips/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/bakery-style-muffin-tips/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 11:33:41 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?post_type=listicle&p=2119820 Want sky-high muffin tops paired with a fluffy, tender texture? Ingredients for baking on concrete background

Use Room Temperature Ingredients

Butter, eggs and milk should all be at room temperature before you begin making your muffin batter. This simple step will make it easier to incorporate crucial ingredients without the chance of overmixing. Pull ingredients out of the fridge one hour before baking and it will make all the difference.

Spoonful of baking powder held above a glass of water

Check Your Baking Powder

Baking powder is the main leavening agent used to help muffins rise while baking in the oven. If your baking powder has been tucked in the pantry for a while, it’s helpful to check that it’s still up for the job. Do a simple baking powder test by combining one teaspoon with 1/3 cup of hot tap water. If it bubbles, you know it’s still fresh and ready to use for baking.

Avoid Overmixing

This tip applies to everything from muffins and quick breads to cakes. The key to a fluffy, tender crumb is to avoid overmixing the batter. Mix wet and dry ingredients until just combined. Don’t continue stirring or mixing once the streaks of flour have disappeared into the batter. Overmixing causes gluten to develop too much, which ultimately leads to a dense texture.

Let the Batter Rest

While you wouldn’t want to use this tip for cakes, it works wonders for bakery-style muffins. Once the batter is prepped, cover the bowl and let it sit for one hour before scooping and baking the muffins. That rest will hydrate the flour for a thick batter. This helps reduce the amount of spreading the batter will do while baking, leading to a higher rise and beautiful muffin tops. It also plays a role in developing better flavor.

Raw dough for lemon muffins with blueberries

Flour Your Mix-Ins

Don’t let those beautiful blueberries, blackberries or chocolate chips sink to the bottom of the muffins. Before folding any mix-ins into the batter, give them a quick toss in all-purpose flour. Just a tablespoonful is plenty to make a difference when it comes to even distribution.

Empty baking tin for cupcakes and muffins with tinfoil liners

Choose a Sturdy Liner

For bakery-style muffins, choose a liner for the muffin tin rather than just greasing with cooking spray. This makes it easier to remove the baked muffins from the tin and also gives them a helpful wall to rise and climb against while baking. Choose to use paper liners or cut squares of parchment to create your own beautiful brown paper liners.

Only Use Half of Your Muffin Tin

The most recognizable feature of bakery-style muffins is a definitively domed top. Baking powder in the recipe will help achieve this structure, but it’s important to give your muffins room to rise. Line every other muffin tin well and grease the top of the pan with cooking spray. This will give plenty of room for the tops to spread out while baking.

Scooping batter into cupcake liners with a cookie scoop

Fill the Muffin Tin Wells

A cookie scoop is a handy kitchen gadget for this job. Use the scoop to divide the batter among the lined muffin tin wells. Fill each well to just below the top. This will provide plenty of batter for a good-sized muffin with a lovely round top.

A photo of a set of freshly baked muffins with sugar glace icing

Add a Topping

Bakery-style muffins are often more eye-catching than a typical homemade muffin. Dress muffins up with toppings to make them extra special. Once the batter is divvied up, sprinkle the tops with coarse sugar or a streusel or crumb topping before baking. You could even add a drizzle of simple glaze on top once the muffins have baked and cooled.

Juicer vs. Blender: What’s the Difference? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/juicer-vs-blender/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/juicer-vs-blender/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 12:26:42 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2119805 If you're not sure whether a juicer vs. blender is right for your kitchen, here's what you need to know about how each appliance works and can be used.

The post Juicer vs. Blender: What’s the Difference? appeared first on Taste Recipes.

]]>
If you’re like me, you might have difficulty deciding which appliances deserve a spot on your kitchen counter. There are so many kitchen appliances competing for space, from basics like coffee pots and toasters to innovations like the beloved Ninja Creami. Buying a juicer or blender is a particularly tough choice—the two serve similar functions but excel in different areas.

As a professional product tester, I’ve used my fair share of juicers and blenders, and I can confidently tell you that the two gadgets aren’t interchangeable in your kitchen. You might be able to use a blender to make juice, but you certainly can’t use a juicer to puree soup! To determine which appliance is the better choice, you’ll want to consider the recipes you plan to make.

Here’s everything you need to know about choosing a juicer vs. blender, including what foods you can make with each appliance and what to look for as you shop.

When to Use a Juicer vs. Blender

When deciding whether to use a juicer or a blender, one of the main questions is: Do I want the pulp removed? Both appliances can process fruits and vegetables, but juicers strain out the pulp, while blenders do not. With that in mind, here’s what you need to know about the best tasks for each appliance.

The best tasks for a juicer

As you may have guessed, the best task for a juicer is, well, making juice. These gadgets can juice virtually any produce, from apples to spinach to carrots. They separate the liquid (and nutrients!) from the pulp, resulting in delicious homemade juice that’s fresh and healthy.

However, juicers aren’t just for juicing. Many juicers can extract liquid from ingredients and strain out the solids. The best masticating juicers can often make fresh almond milk or other nut milk—you simply add water and soaked nuts to the juicer and let it do its work. Some juicers also come with special attachments for making frozen desserts or smoothies. (However, if you only want to make smoothies, we’d recommend one of the best blenders for smoothies, which are generally more efficient.)

The best foods to make in a juicer include:

  • Fresh juice
  • Nut milks
  • Frozen desserts (depending on the machine)

The best tasks for a blender

While you can technically use a blender to make juice, it won’t be as easy as using a juicer. A powerful blender has fast-spinning blades that can puree fruits and vegetables, but the problem is that all the pulp, seeds and other solids will end up in your juice, too. You’ll have to strain the mixture through a fine sieve to extract the pulp before you can enjoy the juice, adding another time-consuming step to the process.

While making juice in a blender is possible, it’s not the best task for this appliance. Blenders are better suited for processing liquid ingredients (this is also the main difference between a blender and a food processor, which is better suited for dry ingredients). When using a blender, you need liquid in the jar to funnel the ingredients to the blades.

For this reason, blenders are the best tool for making smoothies, soups and homemade salad dressings. You can also use a blender to make frozen drinks, cocktails and recipes like homemade butter.

To sum it up, here are the best foods to make in a blender:

  • Soups
  • Smoothies
  • Milkshakes
  • Frozen drinks
  • Salad dressing
  • Homemade sauces
  • Homemade butter

What to Consider When Buying a Juicer

If you’ve decided to buy a juicer, there are a few key factors you’ll want to consider as you compare models.

  • Juicer type: Many people prefer masticating juicers, also called slow or cold-press juicers, which slowly chew up ingredients to extract a maximum amount of juice and preserve nutrients. However, there are also centrifugal juicers that have a high-speed spinning blade. These juicers work faster, but may not yield as much juice and are often much louder.
  • Chute size: Some juicers have extra-large chutes that let you put whole ingredients directly into the appliance, minimizing the prep required. If your juicer has a smaller chute, you must cut ingredients before putting them into the machine.
  • Cleaning: One common complaint about juicers is that they’re a hassle to clean. If you don’t like hand-washing dishes, look for a juicer with dishwasher-safe components or special cleaning tools.
  • Attachments: If you want to use your juicer to make frozen desserts or smoothies, look for a model with special attachments for these tasks.

What to Consider When Buying a Blender

You’ll want to consider different features when shopping for a blender. Here are the main considerations.

  • Capacity: Blenders come in a wide range of sizes. Compact personal blenders can only make around 12 ounces at a time, while oversized blenders can hold 72 ounces or more. You’ll want to consider how you plan to use the blender as you decide what size is best for your home.
  • Power: Most blenders have a power range of 500 to 750 watts, which is suitable for most household tasks. However, if you’re planning to process hard ingredients, like large amounts of ice, you may want to opt for a higher-powered model, such as the best Vitamix blenders.
  • Settings: Some basic blenders have a single pulse option, while others have a wide range of speed and power settings. The latter will give you more versatility when processing different ingredients, but they’ll also cost more.
  • Noise level: Blenders, especially high-powered ones, can be quite noisy. If you plan on making early morning smoothies, you may want to look for a model with a lower decibel rating to avoid disturbing your household.

You can learn more about what to look for in a blender in our guide to the best blenders, which includes insights from firsthand testing on popular models.
