But that's not all\u2014we just discovered a plant that combines our love of flowers and birds, and we can't <em>wait<\/em> to start planting.\r\n\r\n<em>Psst: <\/em>If you're a fellow bird-watcher, don't forget to check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/article\/ways-to-attract-cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tips for attracting cardinals<\/a> to your yard.\r\n<h2>What Is a Dove Flower?<\/h2>\r\nThese absolutely gorgeous plants are known by the scientific name <em>Habenaria radiata<\/em>, but they're more commonly called the dove flower or egret flower. With their gorgeous, feathery white shoots, it's easy to understand where the name comes from! You might also find them under the names fringed orchid or <em>sagiso<\/em>.\r\n\r\nThe papery-looking flower is native to Russia, Korea, China and Japan, where it grows in grassy wetlands. It's recently gained recognition around the world, but is considered an endangered species in the wild, due to habitat destruction.\r\n\r\nIf you're worried that this orchid will be a handful, relax\u2014these plants are easy to take care of. They thrive in sun or partial shade in sandy, well-drained soil. If there isn't much rain, plan to water them to keep them evenly moist. Treated right, a dove flower grows slowly in spring and will release its winged blooms in the summer. Each spike usually produces two or three flowers, but you might see as many as eight!\r\n\r\nA word of caution: These plants aren't fond of winter, so if you live in zone 5 or colder (check out your zone on the <a href=\"https:\/\/planthardiness.ars.usda.gov\/PHZMWeb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USDA map<\/a>), you might want to grow them in containers so you can bring them indoors during the coldest months.\r\n<h2>Where to Find a Dove Flower<\/h2>\r\nIt can be difficult to find the plant itself, but rare orchid seeds can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/listing\/498826837\/5-white-doveegret-flower-seeds-1358?utm_custom1=uid7681-43761879-94&amp;awc=6220_1615421741_e196399da4db2aec2e5ce954399301a8&amp;source=aw&amp;utm_source=affiliate_window&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=us_location_buyer&amp;utm_term=3657&amp;utm_content=202819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Etsy<\/a>.\r\n\r\nWhether you're a gardening beginner or a seasoned green thumb, we've got plenty of tips for planting!
