What is a Ruggable bath mat?

Spoiler: Most bath mats aren't safe for the washer. Because bath mats are highly absorbent, they tend to hold too much water than a front-load washer can handle. Plus, if the bath mat contains a rubber backing, rubber particles tend to peel away and get stuck in the drain. All this results in damages to the washer's spin basket, adding up to costly repairs on your end.

Ruggable's bath mats solve this dilemma with a two-piece system. Each bath mat comes with two pieces: a bath mat cover (aka the mat design) and a non-slip bath mat pad. The bath mat cover easily detaches from the pad when it's time to clean. When it needs a refresh, simply remove the bath mat from the pad, throw it in the washer and dryer, and reattach it to the pad.

The bath mat alone is made from 100% machine-washable fabric. It's ultra-absorbent, so bathroom floors stay dry, while the middle layer stops water from soaking through. Meaning, no need to worry about mold or mildew. As if it could get better, the soft and plush design makes it feel like you're standing on a cloud.

That said, while some may love the "CloudFeel" cushioning technology, it may feel slightly bulky for smaller bathrooms. This is down to personal preference, but worth keeping in mind when shopping.

While the Ruggable bath mat is priced at $129, part of the higher cost can be attributed to the quality of its multi-layer design and range of stylish patterns available. The durability and convenience of being machine washable may justify the investment for those seeking a long-lasting and customizable bath mat.

How We Tested a Ruggable Bath Mat

"Toha25

Our Product Testing Team called in the Ruggable Malta Multicolor Bath Mat for in-person evaluation in January 2024. Not only did they put the Ruggable through a rigorous testing process, but we compared it to 13 other bath rugs and mats on the market. Here’s what we learned.

Packaging and Measuring

Our Ruggable bath mat arrived in standard packaging. It came in a thin cardboard box, large enough that the rug didn't need to be folded, with the cover and mat sacked on top of each other. It also came with an instructions card for assembling, washing and vacuuming.

We measured the mat and found that it was pretty true to size. The pad was slightly smaller than the cover, which is typical for Ruggable rugs as it allows for the rug pad to be fully covered without perfect alignment. The overall pile height of the rug and pad came in at 3/4 of an inch. This was one of the thicket pile heights among the fabric options we tested.

Construction and Absorbency

We then examined the construction. As mentioned, the bath mat relies on Ruggable's signature two-piece system. The top of the rug pad has a sticky, hook-and-loop tape material that connects it to the cover, while the bottom of the pad boasts a grippy, nonstick material. When placed on both vinyl and tile floors, the bath mat is rock solid. It doesn't slip at all!

Next, our testers dipped their toes—literally—into a bucket of water to simulate exiting the shower. They stood on the Ruggable for 5 seconds to allow the rug to absorb the moisture. It took about 90 minutes after this test for the rug to fully dry out.

Cleaning

For the final round of tests, we intentionally dirtied the bath mat—just so we could clean it! We dabbed on three stains: toothpaste, dirt and oil-based lotion. After setting, we spot-treated each before tossing the rug pad in the wash.

We followed the brand's instructions to wash the rug in cold water with mild detergent. (Skip bleach or fabric softener.) Then, put it in the dryer on low or hang dry. The pad is not safe to wash in the machine; instead, spot-clean with a damp cloth.

All three stains lifted out of the lightly colored mat, and we were impressed that it looked as good after cleaning as it did straight from the package.

[quote-card quote="This is the most expensive bath mat we tested. But Ruggable rugs have a lot of style, great grip, washability and absorbency, plus the pad is very supportive. Nothing on our list really compares!" name="Annamarie higley" title="Product Testing Manager" /]

Long-Term Testing

"Ruggable

After the in-office evaluation, Product Testing Manager Annamarie Higley took the Ruggable bath mat home to see how it held up over time. It lives at the base of her bathroom vanity, and she's been standing on it daily for nearly a year.

"I still don’t have one negative thing to say about this product," Annamarie explains. "Some people might view its pile height as a tripping hazard, but to me, it’s a fair tradeoff for the comfort that the thick liner provides. Additionally, the rug has a gradual incline around the perimeter, mitigating some risk of tripping. The rug adheres well to my tile, so it stays in place. And I’m still obsessed with the graphic design of the rug—it looks so cute with my other chenille bath mat and pulls together my collection of hodge-podge towels."

Annamarie uses the Ruggable bath mat during her morning and nighttime routines. "I appreciate it most when I’m getting ready for a special event, one that requires styled hair, full-glam makeup and about an hour of time at my vanity," she says. It’s so comfortable and plush beneath my bare feet that the whole to-do becomes a lot more pleasant. It’s a bit steep price-wise, but after also trying Ruggable’s outdoor and kitchen rugs, the bathmat is my favorite."
