In remembering his life, I'd like to share something I find touching: his appreciation of food.\r\n\r\nThe pope was not interested in lavish banquets. He enjoyed simple meals, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/collection\/empanadas-recipe-ideas\/\">empanadas<\/a> and warm bread. In his eyes, food and faith went hand in hand. He believed food was a basic human right and a way to foster community.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2137073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pope-Francis-Loved-This-Simple-Argentinian-Dessert_PS_THCA18_106837_C01_11_2b.jpg?fit=700,1024\" alt=\"Sundried Tomato Goat Cheese Empanadas\" width=\"700\" height=\"1024\" \/>\r\n\r\nHe frequently denounced food waste. \u201cThrowing away food is like stealing from the table of the poor and the hungry,\u201d he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2022-09\/pope-food-waste-awareness-fao-world-day.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a 2022 speech from the Vatican<\/a>. He was also known for hosting annual meals at the Vatican for unhoused people.\r\n\r\nPope Francis's embrace of humility in all aspects of his life is striking. And while he loved pizza\u2014his home base was in Italy, after all\u2014there is a sweet item from his childhood in Argentina that always held a special place in his heart.\r\n<h2>What was Pope Francis's favorite Argentine dessert?<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-2137076 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pope-Francis-Loved-This-Simple-Argentinian-Dessert_TOH24VP_277688_MF_09_13_2.jpg?fit=700,1024\" alt=\"alfajores cookies in a tray\" width=\"700\" height=\"1024\" \/>\r\n\r\nPope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He reminisced frequently about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stephaniegravalese\/2025\/04\/21\/what-pope-franciss-favorite-foods-reveal-about-his-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning how to cook empanadas from his grandmother<\/a>. Another dish he made as a child was a treat called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteofhome.com\/recipes\/alfajores-cookies\/\">alfajores<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>\r\n\r\nAlfajores are sweet sandwich cookies. They're usually made with two biscuits and a layer of dulce de leche in between. Depending on the region of Latin America where they're made, they can be dusted with powdered sugar, shredded coconut or chocolate.\r\n\r\nThe biscuits are made with either flour or cornstarch, butter, sugar and eggs. The Argentine version usually uses more cornstarch for a softer, more crumbly cookie texture that melts into the rich dulce de leche filling.\r\n\r\nPope Francis kept a love of this childhood treat alive throughout his life. In <a href=\"https:\/\/sophiainstitute.com\/product\/the-vatican-cookbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Vatican Cookbook<\/em><\/a>, Swiss chef David Geisser shared an anecdote about the pope's love of alfajores: \u201cHe smiled as he handed me the sweet gift and said he hoped it would \u2018make the day a little better.\u2019\u201d\r\n\r\nWhether you want to buy some or try to make your own, alfajores are a perfect way to commemorate the life of Pope Francis.
