This was definitely a new challenge for me, as I’m not a baker, and store bought or not, I’ve never had things turn out to be crowd pleasers…this, however, caused my Facebook to nearly break in following my adventure in—not just baking this, but also cutting into the finished product. I will admit to you that I greatly modified this to suit my beginners needs—I used a store bought pumpkin pie, spice cake mix, and cream cheese store bought icing. I used the amount of batter according to the recipe here, which obviously makes all the difference. I decorated the cake with Halloween sprinkles and candy corn with a skeleton face—which thanks to Winton baking toppers looked semi pro—🤣🎃. Everyone loved it. Very thankful for this recipe—STORE BOUGHT or not!
The only reason for maybe 4, not 5 stars would be because of the bottom portion of the cake…it doesn’t always cook up as nicely as it could, leaving it a bit gooey. I sort of liked that too though. ❤️
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2021-11-03
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
JoyHeisey934
The piecaken turned out just like the photos in the publication. I cut off the pecan crust to adjust but it ended up getting very messy! The crustless pecan layer was actually kind of cool but not sure I would recommend. Also strayed from the recipe by pouring mostly all of the cake batter in (put a tray underneath the cake pan knowing it would spill). Messy process! but it turned out surprisingly well. I don't really bake (almost never) so I was proud, my dad was super impressed! (I didn't tell anyone that the pies were store bought:). It is a lot of dessert though - enough to feed at least 20 people (the way I made it anyway). If I do this again I will probably try sticking to the measurements in the recipe but it at the time (and because I never bake) it just seemed like it needed more batter...
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2021-10-31
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Stacey972
Tried it and failed miserably. Can you use frozen pies for this piecaken recipe?
Pies from the freezer section of the grocery store will not work for this piecaken recipe; use prebaked pies from the bakery section. Or, for a fully homemade chocolate pecan piecaken, make the pies from scratch. Start by choosing your favorite pecan pie recipe and pumpkin pie recipe. Bake them well in advance so they have time to fully cool before you get to work on building the piecaken.

What's the best way to frost a piecaken?
Since a piecaken is such a tall layer "cake," you want to make sure the layers are stacked perfectly straight so you don't wind up with a leaning tower. First, chill each layer before you frost it to prevent crumbs from flaking into the frosting (never frost a warm cake!). Then, chill each layer again after it's frosted to let it set—this will make each layer more stable for stacking and lower your risk of a leaning piecaken. Here's more on how to frost a cake and our best cake frosting tips.

How can you make this piecaken recipe your own?
Get creative with your piecaken! Swap out the pumpkin and pecan pies for other seasonal pie recipes, such as apple pie and citrus cranberry pie. You can also use a range of cake mix flavors (we love a butter pecan cake) and experiment with different types of buttercream frosting.
