I have made this twice now. The first time I made it following the recipe almost exactly as written (I used a chocolate fudge cake mix & chocolate fudge pudding as that is what I had on hand). The only thing I did differently was freeze it after it was assembled as It would be a few days before I would be serving it. It was very good! I took it to a gathering of friends & they GOBbled it up! The only change I made the 2nd time was melting about a half of a bag of caramel bits with a couple of tablespoons of evaporated milk in the microwave and adding that to the filling to give it a bit of caramel taste, and then sprinkled coarsely chopped pecans over the filling before adding the 2nd layer of the cake. Again, I froze it (fully assembled) as it would be a couple of days before serving. It was again served to the same group of friends, as they requested that I make it again. I've used this filling recipe as frosting for years. Sometimes called \"mock whipped cream\" or Danish cream. Mom labeled is French Fluff frosting. Cover the milk and flour mixture as it cools. I beat the butter and granulated sugar together first, then gradually add spoonfuls of the cooked milk mixture. I used whole milk. Gobs were patented in 1927 by Harris-Boyer Bakery of Johnstown, PA and still made there under Yost Dutch Maid Bakery. You can order them online!! Made fresh and shipped promptly. This recipe sounds very different from the original, but good maybe for a change of texture and flavor. The original uses buttermilk, baking soda and power and makes the cake and icing from scratch.
