To suite my taste and cut down on calories, I cut both the brown sugar and white sugar amounts in half. In my opinion, dates are already fairly sweet. To the date mixture, I also added 1\/4-1\/2 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice after cooking. I followed the rest of the recipe exactly. As other people have mentioned the crust is a little crumbly, but I didn't mind. I thought it had a nice crunchy texture, though a little messy to eat. However, the date mixture is hard to spread without pulling up the bottom crust. I ended up using my fingers which worked better than a spatula. After baking, I cooled the bars to room temp and then moved to the fridge for 30 mins for easy cutting, as suggested by another reviewer. Overall, I think they turned out great! Definitely addicting! Already thinking about making again, but I would probably double the amount of dates (and water) just to get more filling or add a 1\/2-1 cup of dried chopped apricots.","reviewRating":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Rating","ratingValue":4,"worstRating":1,"bestRating":5}},{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Review","datePublished":"2019-11-05","author":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Person","name":"CyanBus"},"reviewBody":"Beautiful bars, I made them vegan by omitting the egg white and substituting some soya milk. Glad I used the whole egg as previously suggested although crust mixture was still so dry that I also added 1Tbsp of water. The new thing these days is cut a dessert in 16- 2\"X2\" piece and call it healthy. Cheesecake cut that small is healthy! I have personally boycotted any recipe made in a 8\"X8\" pan. Really there is a cup of brown sugar at 836 calories and 1\/4 cup of white sugar at 190 calories in this recipe, and lets not forget the 500 calories of melted butter. Healthy, I don't think so... People take a basically fattening dessert, cut it into smaller pieces and call it a low-cal dessert. Almost 200 calories for a small piece is not low cal. It might take a little experimentation, but one way to cut the calories in addition to the other suggestions is to try substituting applesauce for the butter. You would have to cut down on the amount of water, but that would cut a few calories out. Also, read the labels on the margarine sticks, like Fleischmann's. Those things still have trans fats in them which are more unhealthy than butter.","reviewRating":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Rating","ratingValue":3,"worstRating":1,"bestRating":5}},{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Review","datePublished":"2010-09-02","author":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Person","name":"OliveMagnet"},"reviewBody":"It was quite good-but definitely needs more filling.","reviewRating":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Rating","ratingValue":3,"worstRating":1,"bestRating":5}},{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Review","datePublished":"2010-09-02","author":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"Person","name":"GreenBattery"},"reviewBody":"Found this excellent.
