this dish reminds me of a Greek dish called Moussaka. I browned my ground beef first - seasoning it very well. I used eggplant instead of potatoes for a lower carb meal. when i served it, i put feta cheese on top. The dish with eggplant only needed to cook 20-30 minutes. Delicious! I received this recipe from a school friends father when I was just 16. His recipe did have celery chopped and added to the layers. I am now 66 years old and have made this often for my family over the years they all loved it as a hearty warm them up meal in the winter time.

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2021-07-21
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
pammy54
This is a good base recipe, but you have to tweak it in order to not make it bland. I had to cut the recipe in half, since it's just me. I browned the ground beef first, but added three large cloves of fine minced garlic, and some smoked paprika. I only had red potatoes, so I sliced them very thin and parboiled them a little so that I could be sure that they were cooked through well. Followed the recipe other than that, except I used low sodium tomatoes. I did add some slices of muenster cheese on the top. I have my old cast iron Dutch oven that I put it in, and I put foil over the top and stuck it in the oven. Took the foil off halfway through and let it finish baking. I thought it turned out pretty good, and my neighbor did as well. We use each other for guinea pigs ss she's a really good cook, too. But thank you for the base recipe and the ideas!
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2022-12-14
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Terry607

I always look at recipes as a guide to creating a dish my family would like. I used ground beef, Italian sausage, and mushrooms. I browned the meat and mushrooms, seasoned with seasoned salt, pepper, garlic, onion salt, and thyme. Then layered the meat, potatoes, and onion slices as suggested, and added cheddar cheese to the first layer. For the last 10 minutes, I topped off the casserole with more cheese and cooked it uncovered. Parsley to serve. We loved it.

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2024-08-13
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Carmen412

I cook for two. I had 1/2 lb of good quality ground beef and one large russet potato on hand. I used a Corning Ware casserole dish to layer the beef, onion, and potato as instructed. I seasoned the layers with salt, a generous amount of freshly ground black pepper, and garlic powder. I used Rotel tomatoes to give the dish a boost of flavor. I baked it, covered, at 375 degrees for about 55 minutes. It had a good flavor and we liked the combination of ingredients. I served it with green beans. I see no reason to brown the beef as long as its fresh and high quality.

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2025-02-26
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Lisa1295

This is my Moms recipe! I'm 74 so you know this is an older beloved recipe, passed on to generations. However, we always put it in the oven. Pealing and slicing 4 pounds of potatoes takes 30 minutes. In fact, that was way too many potatoes.. So the actual prep time is about 45 minutes if you are using fresh ingredients. • To keep parsley fresh for up to a month, trim the stems and place the bunch in a tumbler with an inch of water. Be sure no leaves are in the water. Tie a produce bag around the tumbler to trap humidity; store in the refrigerator. Each time you use the parsley, change the water and turn the produce bag inside out so any moisture that has built up inside the bag can escape.
