Sorry, but we truly disliked this dish. Without first test-driving recipe, I made a huge batch for my husband's 90th birthday party, as part of a buffet dinner -- and 90% of our guests hated it! With its unusual combination of ingredients -- especially black-eyed peas & the overwhelming amount of ketchup -- I had been intrigued by the recipe. Thankfully I ran the slow cooker on our back patio, so our house wasn't inundated by the odor!

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-02-21
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Janey506

Party Time Beans. I followed the directions exactly. I made them in the Crock Pot. My 19 year old daughter refused to eat them. I had a small bowl and thought they tasted smoky. I did not add anything in to it to make it smoking flavored. But I did not like the flavor of them. My Husband, only ate 1/2 of his small bowl,. Got up from the table, threw the rest of his bowl out and dumped out the Crock Pot full of Party Time Beans. Asked me to NEVER make this again, and ripped up the recipe. So this was not a keeper and a waste of money. The leftovers rarely last long. I am single now and will only make it for potlucks and I always double the recipe. The sweetness can be overwhelming so I cut the sugar to prevent this. I also use a large can of baked beans and switch up the other beans as well as add about 1/2 # cooked bacon. You can double the recipe just by using 2 cans each of other beans without doubling the sauce. And a last suggestion, cook for an hour in the oven as cooking in a slow cooker dries out the casserole. When I started cooking these beans, there were no crock pots.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2020-08-30
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
JerryHanson
I steam pressure cooker can this recipe (cold packed) so that I always have them ready when needed/wanted. I did take another’s advice and cut the amount of brown sugar in half: the beans were still plenty sweet. I add an extra tablespoon of cider vinegar for a subtle sweet/sour taste. Partytime Beans Tips

What meat goes with beans?

This vegetarian bean recipe also tastes great made with meat. Add crumbled cooked bacon or turkey bacon, crumbled cooked ground beef or Italian sausage, or sliced smoked sausage or hot dogs to the beans.

What goes with beans for dinner?

One dish I love to eat with baked beans is Slow Cooked BBQ Pork Ribs. Another good option is Barbecued Chicken, or sometimes Crispy Fried Chicken. Just add corn on the cob, coleslaw or other easy picnic side dishes and you have a feast!

What other variations of this bean recipe can I try?

Some of our readers prefer this bean recipe with half the amount of brown sugar. Another reader doubles the beans but not any of the other ingredients, which also results in a dish that's less sweet. Add the ingredients you love, whether it’s caramelized pearl onions, chopped cooked ham or diced jalapenos. Note the changes you enjoy or that you want to try next time you make the dish, and soon you’ll be creating your own recipe like a pro!
