From classic chocolate and pastel pink to seasonal favorites like unicorn, peppermint brownie and earth cake, Starbucks cake pops come in an array of flavors for any occasion and taste preference.

Their biggest drawback? The price tag. While they may be worth the occasional splurge, shelling out a couple of bucks for a single bite of cake may seem unreasonable to some.

The good news is that you can make dozens of cake pops at home (along with these other clever copycat Starbucks recipes). The few simple ingredients you’ll need from the baking aisle for a few dozen homemade cake pops will cost less than half a dozen cake pops from your local coffee shop!

This recipe is the perfect weekend baking project for kids or a group of friends. The flavor options are endless (some of our favorite flavor ideas are below), and everyone will have a blast rolling, dipping and decorating to their heart’s content.

Prepare and bake the cake mix in a greased 13×9-inch baking pan according to the package directions. Let cool for five minutes in the pan, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

Crumble the cake into a large bowl. Add the frosting to the bowl, and use a rubber spatula to evenly distribute the frosting into the crumbled cake.

Shape the cake mixture into balls about 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Place on baking sheets and insert the cake pop sticks. Freeze for at least two hours or refrigerate for at least three hours, until the cake balls are firm.

Editor’s Tip: Use a cookie scoop to portion and roll the cake mixture into uniform, equal-sized balls. Opt for sticks specifically packaged for cake pops or candy-making. Dip the tip of each stick into melted candy coating before inserting it into the cake ball. The candy coating will harden and act like edible glue to prevent your cake ball from sliding off the stick once it is chilled.

Once the cake balls are firm, melt the candy coating in the microwave according to the package directions. Dip each cake ball in the coating, allowing any excess to drip off.

Then roll, sprinkle or drizzle with toppings of your choice. Insert the cake pops into a foam block or acrylic cake pop stand for easy drying. Let stand until set.

Our favorite part about this homemade copycat Starbucks cake pops recipe (and the Starbucks secret menu, for that matter) is the limitless potential for creative flavor combinations.

For the best results, we recommend storing cake pops in the refrigerator or freezer, either wrapped individually in storage wrap or in an airtight container. For all our best storage tips, don’t miss this guide on how to store cake pops.

In the fridge, Starbucks cake pops will last for about one week. In the freezer, you can expect them to stay fresh for several months.

Absolutely! Feel free to swap in a favorite homemade cake or frosting recipe if you prefer. Any flavor of cake will work. When it comes to frosting, American buttercream or cream cheese frosting works well for homemade cake pops.

Certainly. Making cake pops is a great way to use up any cake scraps left after leveling a layer cake (if you haven’t already munched on them).

A few factors can cause the sticks to fall out of your homemade cake pops. First, check your cake mixture’s consistency. Make sure your cake mixture isn’t crumbly, since a dry cake pop mixture will not adhere well to the sticks. If your mixture doesn’t hold its shape easily while shaping into balls, consider adding a few extra tablespoons frosting until the desired consistency is reached.

Also, not chilling your cake pops in the refrigerator or the freezer before dipping them into the candy coating is a common mistake. This step is crucial and helps set the cake balls and bond them to the sticks so they don’t fall out while dipping or decorating.

Finally, cake pop sticks should be inserted roughly halfway into each ball. If you don’t insert them far enough, the sticks will be prone to falling out. Conversely, inserting the sticks too far can also cause cake pops to split in half if you’re not careful. Handle the cake pops with care until you find the sweet spot.

Use this easy recipe for copycat Starbucks cake pops to create any flavor combo your heart desires.

[304158,306983,305757,305744,306980,304423,304328,339637,307018,304288,305487,306171,307033,304515,304180,304408,304368,303887,306848,304347,304268,307023,304455,304458,303719,304558,324623,304150,303883,303745,304473,304565],"categories-v2":[310461,309438,310025,311406,311389,310014,311415,308821,308988,308984,310059,259620,310796,312036,310079,308880,309462,308813,308745,308478,309603,308998,259483,310062,308860,308865,308324,308910,309177,309434,308476,308369,308876,308920
206601
/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Copycat-Starbucks-Cranberry-Bliss-Bars_EXPS_TOHcom24_278043_MD_P2_09_24_1b.jpg
13 Einstein Bros. In order to make the cake balls stay on the stick, keep the balls no bigger than 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Purchase an ice cream scoop that measures 2-tablespoons for uniform sizes. Place the cake balls on a cookie sheet and chill them for at least 1 hour, or overnight, in the refrigerator; or, chill in the freezer for at least 20 minutes. About the coating, you can purchase meltable candy wafers from any crafts/fabric store in all sorts of colors, or order them from Amazon - Merckens and Wilton are great brands. To keep the cake balls from falling off the stick, first dip the stick at least 1-inch into the melted chocolate (or whatever candy wafers you decide to use) and THEN push the stick into the cake ball. Gently place the cake ball with its inserted stick back on the cookie sheet and chill again for 15 minutes so the candy coated stick will harden. When you're ready to dip the cake balls into the melted candy and decorate the way you want, have handy a styrofoam block to push the stick into it so the cake pop is standing straight up - this will allow the melted candy to dry. After they are dry, I like to individually wrap each cake pop in a little cellophane bag and close with a colored foil twist, which you can purchase at any crafts store. Another decorating idea is to coat the cake pop in one color, let it dry, and then dip a fork into a different melted candy color and drizzle it over the cake pop for an artistist look. These cake pops should be stored in the refrigerator so the candy coating won't get soft. You can keep them out of the refrigerator for a few hours, as long as the temperature doesn't go above 70-degrees. Remember to keep food safety in mine! You also might be interested in checking out Bakerella.com for a ton of cake pop decorating ideas, too. :)
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2011-12-01
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Samantha_Sweezy
I made these for an event at work. I used almond bark for the coating. I think that was a big mistake! The cake pops wound up being way too heavy as they started to thaw. I wound up freezing the pops over night. When I went to try to coat them however, they were still too heavy and fell off the sticks. I have since done some research and I think I will purchase a scooper to assist with the sizing. Also, I read somewhere that if you dip the stick in frosting and THEN insert it into the pop that it helps with stability. And I highly recommend purchasing a styrofoam block (like found at Hobby Lobby or Michael's for plants) to assist with standing the cake pops up after they have their candy coating. I didn't have one - and well, an upside down egg carton did not work at all! :P Overall, I think these were good, I just was not prepared for how dense & heavy these would turn out.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2012-01-10
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
runningneumann5
I made 9 doz for a cookie exchange and had fun. Fun & Festive Cake Pops Tips

How do you decorate cake pops for beginners?
If you are new to making cake pops, keep your cake pop decorating simple and organized from the get-go. Keep various sprinkles and toppings in their own dishes and have them ready to go before you begin. Rather than dealing with chocolates, which require complex processes such as tempering to retain proper "snap" and shine, use confectioners’ candy coatings or wafers, candy melts, or other coatings specifically designed for cake pops. Make sure that you allow your formed cake balls to chill for a bit in your refrigerator before dipping and decorating.

How do you make cake pops smooth?
When forming your cake pops, tightly compact the scoop of cake crumbs and frosting in the palm of your hand and roll into a very compact, round ball. Once it has chilled, if you still find the cake ball a little bumpy, try gently rolling and compacting it again while cold. When dipping the cake ball, stir the coating well first to make sure there are no lumps. If the coating seems a little thick, stir in a bit of vegetable shortening and reheat gently, stirring until smooth again.

Can you leave cake pops in the fridge overnight before dipping?
Absolutely! Form the cake balls, place on a sheet pan or tray in a single layer, and cover with plastic wrap so they do not dry out. Remove the cake balls the next day and let them sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before dipping.

How do you decorate cake pops for beginners?
If you are new to making cake pops, keep cake pop decorating simple and organized from the get-go. Make sure that you allow the formed cake balls to chill for a bit in the refrigerator before dipping and decorating.
How do you make cake pops smooth?
When forming cake pops, tightly compact the scoop of cake crumbs and frosting in the palm of your hand and roll into a very compact, round ball.
Absolutely! Form the cake balls, place on a sheet pan or tray in a single layer, and cover well so they do not dry out. Remove the cake balls the next day and let them sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before dipping.
