With a pillowy-soft flour tortilla wrapped around a savory filling of meat, cheese and beans, even the most simple burrito recipe is a delicious one. However, as we’ve come to learn (thanks, Chipotle), the best burrito recipe is limited only by your imagination.

From humble bean burritos to beef burritos and our favorite fiesta chicken burritos, burritos can be filled with just about anything you can dream up. They come in all sizes big and small. Better yet, burritos can be prepped and even frozen of time, making them a perfect make-ahead menu option for busy families.

With all their flavor, versatility and ease, it’s no wonder why burritos have become such a staple on family dinner tables everywhere.

In a large cast-iron or heavy skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain to remove the excess oil, then stir in the taco seasoning. Remove the seasoned beef from the skillet, and set aside. Wipe the skillet clean.

In a small saucepan, cook the refried beans over medium-low heat until heated through, two to three minutes.

Spoon about 1/3 cup refried beans off-center on each tortilla. Top each with 1/4 cup seasoned beef. Sprinkle evenly with cheese. Then, fold the sides and ends of the tortilla over the filling. Roll the tortilla over the filling until sealed.

Editor’s Tip: You can gently warm the tortillas before you begin assembling the burritos. This makes them pliable, so they’re less likely to rip or tear when wrapping them around the filling.

In the same skillet you used to cook the beef, brown the burritos in canola oil on all sides over medium-high heat. Transfer to a plate, and serve warm with sour cream and salsa, or the toppings of your choice.

Once assembled, a burrito is best enjoyed within 24 hours or the tortilla may become soggy. For the best taste, we suggest storing the ingredients in separate airtight containers and assembling the burritos on-demand for easy meal prep if you don’t plan on enjoying the assembled burrito right away.

To make freezer burritos, cool the burritos to room temperature, and individually wrap them in paper towels and foil. Then, freeze in an airtight freezer container for up to three months. To enjoy, remove the foil, and place the paper towel-wrapped burrito on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high until heated through, turning once every couple of minutes. Let stand for 20 seconds before taking that first bite.

Rolling a burrito tightly so it holds all of its precious fillings can take practice, so don’t be discouraged if yours isn’t as pretty as the one from your local taco shop. When you fold a burrito, it is important not to overfill your tortilla, as that would make it more difficult to roll and more prone to tearing.

For best results, assemble the filling in a long cylinder that’s a bit off-center on your tortilla. Then, carefully fold the sides over the ends of the “log” before rolling the tortilla over itself and the filling. Use your fingers and thumbs to carefully tuck and pleat the tortilla as you go, using a firm grip to help guide the burrito’s shape.

While a jumbo burrito packed with meat, beans, and veggies is an all-in-one meal, a few side dishes are never a bad idea. Homemade tortilla chips with salsa make a great appetizer, and extra refried beans, a pile of fluffy Spanish rice, or a platter of Mexican street corn would all make tasty additions to any burrito feast.

Burritos share many ingredients with other popular Mexican and Tex-Mex recipes like enchiladas, but they are their own unique entity. Unlike enchiladas, which are rolled, burritos are tightly wrapped with no filling peeking out at the ends. The method in which burritos are wrapped keeps the filling contained and allows them to be a portable, handheld food that does not require a fork and knife.

Additionally, while enchiladas can be made with either corn or flour tortillas, burritos are exclusively made with flour tortillas and are often grilled or steamed lightly before serving. Burritos can have an array of fillings, but at the very least, a burrito recipe typically includes a savory filling of seasoned meat, beans and cheese. Packed with beans, your choice of protein and a myriad of other potential fillings, this easy burrito recipe is your launchpad to unlimited flavor combinations.

[304032,307308,306849,304328,305271,304292,304338,304343,303966,307320,340638,303887,306848,304268,307307,305383,305374,304350,324623,304020,304005,340660,303883,306875],"categories-v2":[308623,310347,309605,308984,308481,309216,308305,308992,308993,308495,310362,340804,308478,309603,259483,310342,309391,309381,309001,309177,308594,308549,340843,308476,309790
206601
Chicken I like to add a little cooked rice and black beans (drained and rinsed), plus some sauteed jalapeno peppers or canned green chilies and a little of your favorite taco sauce to the refried beans then mix, spread that magic on and then add in the meat and cheese, roll then fry in a light oil. Throw some additional shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, salsa, guac, olives, or whatever adders you like on the plate and you basically have a chimichanga, not a burrito. Shredded seasoned chicken or ground chorizo is also great to substitute for the beef. If you don't want meat, use more black beans and leave the meat out. Also, have fun with the cheeses used... this is a basic recipe.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-07-31
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Ray748
I can't even really consider this an actual unique recipe. It's on the back of every can of refried beans or packet of taco seasoning mix. By the way, once you fry the tortilla, it's called a Chimichanga not a burrito. You can certainly use a taco seasoned pulled pork, chicken or brisket too. Been making these (with variations) since I was 15. I'm almost 60 now, so this is nothing new for sure, more like common knowledge. Yes, add black beans and/or rice if you like, corn if you like, etc. The tortilla is a vessel for whatever you want to mix in. Add tomato, jalapeños, salsa, whatever you like to the mix before rolling it up. If you fry (or bake) it, it's a Chimichanga, if you don't, it's a burrito. Both are good. I eat chimies with a knife and fork because I top them with more cheese, vegs and sauces (refried beans and rice usually on the side); burritos are mostly hand-held and self contained. You can also substitute small shrimp and/or crab meat with some queso cheese for some amazing seafood chimichangas too.
Maybe make this recipe "your own", instead of posting this generic off-the-shelf thing. You know, like homemade refried beans, your own homemade tortilla shells, your own taco seasoning blend, etc...

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-01-10
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Aidenmaddiemom
So easy and delicious! Were her burritos authentic Mexican, NO, were they from scratch, NO, were they freaking AMAZINGLY delicious, HECK YES. Pretty much follow this recipe, but she would chop a russet into diced pieces so they'd cook quick and become soft, and she'd add a can of whole green beans, (not French sliced). I know the beans are about un-mexican as you can get, but the papas made that burrito stand out in my mind for 50 years. She didn't use a seasoning spice in the packet, Mama used jalapeños and ohhhhh baby did my eyes water, but I loved them. Another little thing I learned from her was she would take her flour tortilla and put it on her stove top burner and turn it as it would darken. You would swear that tortilla just came off a tortilla press.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2021-01-20
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
PurpleCarrot
These are so tasty and easy!!!
