If you love to bake, learning how to make vanilla frosting is a delicious way to make homemade confections even more decadent. Our recipe for homemade vanilla frosting is easy and approachable, so it makes for a fun baking project to do with kids. All you need are a few simple ingredients (many of which you may already have at home) to create a thick and spreadable frosting that’s delicious on cakes, cookies or sweet breads.

In a large bowl, beat the butter until it’s creamy. Beat in the confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and enough milk to achieve the desired consistency.

Homemade vanilla frosting stores really nicely in the refrigerator. Once the frosting is mixed, transfer it to an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid.

If stored properly in the refrigerator, this easy vanilla frosting can last for up to seven days.

When making homemade vanilla frosting, it’s best to start with room-temperature ingredients. If the butter is too cold, it could result in a clumpy frosting that’s not smooth throughout. Using room-temperature ingredients ensures that everything mixes together evenly and consistently.

An electric handheld mixer or stand mixer is the best way to mix this vanilla frosting until smooth. A handheld mixer is an easy way to fully incorporate all the ingredients without putting unnecessary strain on your wrist or hand. If you’re looking for a new handheld mixer, check out our test of the best hand mixers.

This vanilla frosting is super versatile, so you can use it to top a variety of cookies, cakes or cupcakes. The person who said it was grainy....did you use regular sugar? That would make it grainy for sure. I did add the egg as others suggested. We wanted colored icing, so when we (me and 15-year-old granddaughter) added color it made it more runny, so next batch we won't add as much milk.
BTW: also, if yours was too runny...notice that it calls for 4-6 Tablespoons of milk...not cups. (And I say this because even my granddaughter didn't know this the first time she used a recipe that called for Tbs.)
I love that my granddaughter now knows how to make icing instead of buying it in the store. I adapted it for milk intolerance. I read the other reviews and did adjust a few things. I made my girl/boy twins a chocolate chip cookie cake for their 4th birthday. I, like another, only had unsalted butter so I added a little salt to the sifted powdered sugar before adding it to the mixed butter. I was afraid to mess it up so, I put the milk in a teaspoon at a time while mixing. When I was finished the frosting was light and creamy; not dense at all or runny. My kids loved it! My older son said he wants the same thing for his birthday. If you use salted butter it cuts the sweetness down, I’ve been told by numerous people that this icing is the best they’ve ever had. All the negative comments on here are outrageous, you either used too much water or didn’t use softened butter (probably melted) and there doesn’t need to be a clarification on confectioners sugar as across the board it is powdered sugar. There is also a thing called google to look things like that up, or in a pinch throw some granulated sugar in a processed.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2020-03-01
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
HPaino
Rachel Makayla Sophie Miko: this is how feedback is left: Yes, I made this too thin the first pass with 1/2 tablespoon more milk than needed. To 4.5 cups of powdered sugar I use 2 sticks (1 cup) of butter, yes it's OK to do that, it's called buttercream for a reason. I think that like fudge buttercream frosting is affected by humidity in the air and when using powdered sugar a little liquid goes a long way. I always start out by mixing together the butter and powdered sugar till it's as mixed as it can get and then the milk, I use half and half with the liquid flavoring added to it. With liquid every drop counts so I start with less liquid then called for and then go from there til I get the consistency I want, I have noticed that over the last year or so this site has revamped recipes and seems to dwell on 2% milk instead of the 96% lean (4%) milk which I always have a gallon of in my fridge along with a container of half and half and heavy cream. There is no low fat or non-fat any kind of dairy in our house and we're healthy. I gave this recipe 3 stars because it really doesn't have enough butter. You can't put health before flavor, texture and comfort factor. I know some might disagree or cringe but we're talking dessert here.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2019-04-13
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
JulieDallaire
Used this for cut-out cookies....PERFECT! You might want to try adding one pasteurized egg, after all the ingredients have been beaten well. It makes the frosting more fluffy and flavorful. Make sure butter is room temperature, soft. Beat the butter first, gradually add the powered sugar and some milk. If the frosting looks too dry, add more milk and if too liquid, add more sugar. Beat on high and for at least 5 minutes. Then add the egg. You might have to add more sugar, after adding the egg because the egg is part of the moisture. I use whole milk. It is heavier than 2%. The frosting is delicious. Colleen, you probably needed to beat the ingredients more.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2019-03-04
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Guest6831
I don’t know what the last two comments were talking about but hands down easy and came out perfect!!! I made sure that the butter was not melted but softened (letting it sit at room temperature for some time) and used powdered sugar (which I assume is the same as confectioners sugar), and following all the instructions and steps in the video. I ended up with a butter cream that had small white chunks in it, something that I think a few of the one star reviews also ended up with.
