It is an all time favorite of mine\n\nNext, there are a few speedboats you hit while making. For example, the batter is VERY thick. Honestly, it's more the consistency of cookie dough. Dont try to use a hand mixer on this, it will break (been there, done that). The reason for that, though, is all the liquid that is in the apples will cook out and mix with the batter while baking. It's supposed to be like that.\n\nNext, it is VERY sweet if you use anything other than a tart apple; I always go straight for the big granny smiths. This has to be the best apple cake I've ever made! I didn't use a hand mixer to makeit, opting to mix by hand. The cake has a tender and moist crumb and very \"apple-y\". I followed the recipe exactly using the apples I had on hand (1 Gala, 2 MacIntosh and 1 Cortland) making just enough cubed apple called for in the recipe. The sauce is delicious as well (I added about 1\/2 teaspoon cinnamon to the sauce). After a weekend apple picking adventure, I came home in search of something different to make instead of a pie or crisp. I came upon this recipe, which would also help me to use up some heavy cream I had. This cake was moist and apple forward. I did cut the sugar amount in half based on other reviews and I cannot imagine how sweet it would have been otherwise. The caramel sauce pulls it all together.
