The sweetness/tartness of the end result does depend on how sweet/tart the apples are you use. The sweetness/tartness of mine has been slightly different each time. As far as the cake mix goes....it's pretty easy to measure out 9 oz. from a regular size box of cake mix. I don't understand the 1 star reviews because people made the mistake of not checking the ounces on the cake mix package. Because you made a mistake doesn't make the recipe bad. My whole family loved this apple crisp! I used honey crisp apples from my local apple orchard. They are a sweet Apple. I may cut back on sugar depending upon which type of apple I use next time. This was a good enough apple crisp, but I prefer a topping that doesn't include cake mix with it's added chemicals.....I do use a mix on rare occasions and had one I needed to use before it became out-dated - that's why I decided to use this recipe - so I weighed out 11 oz., ( two thirds of the mix), and used that in the topping. (The rest of the mix got baked into cupcakes using one third of the ingredients called for on the box.) I could taste something that tasted different, kind of like coconut oil, and it detracted from the delicious taste of apples. A simpler oat topping would have been better and more complimentary to the apples. Still, it was a pretty good dessert.....everyone ate it!

This one is a keeper! My whole family loved this apple crisp! I used honey crisp apples from my local apple orchard. They are a sweet Apple. I may cut back on sugar depending upon which type of apple I use next time. Easy to mix up and easy to bake. No fuss recipe!! I did open a 15 oz cake mix but only used approximately 9 oz. Like others have said be sure to check the size cake mix.

I didn't notice the yellow cake mix isn't the standard size. Way too dry and powdery for topping. Please make sure of the size of your cake mix. Most are 15 oz not nine. So measure out cake mix. I used the whole box was like a pile of powder. Delicious! Listened to other reviewers and cut the white sugar down to 2.5 Tablespoons...it was plenty sweet enough! I was out of "real" butter and had to use Country Crock...turned out fine. Put little pats of butter on the crust top to moisten the crunch some (like you would on a dump cake). I used a 9 X13 pan to make it in and this was easily 10 servings. This is good recipe but needs some adjustments. I used only half the cupmof sugar, but it was still too sweet. This was by far the best apple crisp recipe i have ever had. It was sweet but it was so very good. It lasted less than 24 hours in our house. Very tasty, but I agree with many reviewers: it's way too sweet. I reduced the first sugar measurement to 3/4 cup, but it was still too sweet. Next time I'll reduce it to half a cup and use tart apples instead of sweeter apples. Overall, the crisp had great flavor, but was still too sweet. I was not able to locate a 9 oz. box of cake mix, to had to use half of an 18.25 oz. box. Jiffy cake mixes are not available in all areas.

My husband enjoyed this apple crisp very much. I accidentally used an 18 ounce box of yellow cake mix. I was wondering why it seemed like there was not enough butter to make it "sprinkle". Next time I will pay more attention. I like making a variety of different apple recipes in the fall. I will definitely add this to my repetoir.
