Too often we don’t consider pork chops because we’re expecting them to emerge tough, dry and low on flavor. What a missed opportunity, though. This recipe for apple pork chops solves all three challenges and gives you a weeknight dinner option that’s ready in under 30 minutes.

While some pork and apple combinations smother the meat in applesauce, this apple pork chop recipe aims for a chunkier texture that glazes the pork with a sweet and spicy syrup. The addition of chopped pecans gives the sauce some satisfying crunchiness too.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over a medium heat and add the pork chops. Take care not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for four to five minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 145°F, the safe internal temperature for pork.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

Remove the chops and keep them warm. Add the apple slices, chopped pecans, brown sugar mix and more butter to the same pan, scraping the pan to release any crispy meat residue. Cook until the apples are tender and the sugar has dissolved into a smooth syrup. Serve over the chops or on the side.

Editor’s Tip: Get the best caramelized crust on your chops by seasoning first with salt and pepper and resting at room temperature for about 10 minutes before pan-frying.

You can store any leftover pork chops and apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the oven with a little added water to stop the chops from drying out.

You shouldn’t have any issues with freezing pork chops and apples. Make a batch, allow it to cool and store them in a sealed, freezer-friendly container for up to three months. Allow them to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Bone-in pork chops in particular exude a grayish protein called albumin. You’ll see it on cooked salmon too. It’s perfectly edible, but if you don’t like the slippery texture then just wipe it away or brine your pork chops for a few hours before browning.

Bone-in chops have a fat cap that will give you a more intense and meaty flavor. You’ll need to cook them for longer to reach the internal temperature of 145°. If you’re not in a hurry, they are worth trying as an alternative since they stay moist for longer.

A steaming, buttery heap of fall side dishes, such as Brussels sprouts or cabbage, go nicely. Alternatively, load up on carbs such as mashed potatoes, rice or noodles to soak up the sweet sauce.

When I found this pork chops with apples recipe online years ago, it quickly became a favorite. this version of pork chops and apples, you can serve the apple on the side or smother the chops with sauce. Either way, you’ve got a classic pairing of sweet pork, tart apple and aromatic spices.
Hands down the best pork recipe I've ever made. However I only use 4 apples if I'm doubling the recipe as, unless you're really into them, 4 can be a bit overwhelming. I like to use 2 large or 3 regular/small apples instead. We've tried so many different varieties of too, mixed types, tried sweet ones, you name it. My fave are standard granny smith but the rest of my family seems to prefer pink ladies or sweet apples.

If you have leftover apples, despite having cooked with the pork, they are great for simple desserts like plain vanilla ice cream or breakfast too. They pair well with warm oatmeal and a cup of maple/vanilla tea or coffee in the morning.

I've made it for quite a few guests and so far everyone has even eaten the fat from the pork, it often comes out soft and packed with flavour. I think it calls for a bit too many apples. Unless you plan on making just the apples to go with the chops, I would only use maybe two apples.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-10-02
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Jubilee

Can you use bone-in pork chops?
If you have bone-in pork chops on hand, feel free to use them instead of boneless pork chops for this recipe. We like boneless for easy pork chop recipes because they cook so quickly, typically taking only 4 to 5 minutes per side in a hot skillet. The cooking time varies for bone-in chops depending on their thickness, but most bone-in pork chops take a little bit longer to cook, typically 8 to 10 minutes per side. Simply use an instant-read thermometer to know when the pork is finished, no matter whether you use boneless or bone-in chops.
What types of apples should you use to make pork chops with apples?
We find that tart apple varieties like Granny Smith or Braeburn work best for pork chops. Their juicy, acidic flavor pairs exceptionally well with buttery pecans and savory pork. However, feel free to substitute your favorite type of apple when making this recipe, keeping in mind that some apples are sweeter than others. If you end up with too many apples, don’t worry—there are plenty of apple recipes to make with the leftovers.
How do you store pork chops with apples?
Leftover pork chops with apples can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. If using bone-in pork chops, cut the meat off the bone before storing (but save the bone in the freezer for the next time you make bone broth). The best way to reheat pork chops is to cover them in foil and bake them in a 350° oven for 10 to 15 minutes. The apples can be reheated separately in the microwave, or in a small skillet on the stovetop.
