Loved this! We took the recommendations of previous reviews and used only 1 pound of hamburger and mild sausage and beans. We also used whole pepperoni and cut it up into bite-size pieces. No green pepper because we don’t like the green peppers. And we added more water. It was a hit and super fast and easy.

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2023-11-12
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
Charlie443

Like the name states, this IS a contest winning chili! I won a contest against twelve other chilis by a landslide.

I did make a few minor adjustments. I used one pound of ground beef instead of two. I also added an extra can of chili beans, a can of crushed tomatoes, and some Italian seasoning. Oh and I added a jalapeño for some extra spice.

I made mine in a crockpot the night before the contest to let all the ingredients get to know each other. Then started it on low heat a few hours before the contest began.

I just won the contest out of 8 chilis! My modifications, based on other comments were only 1lb beef, mild Italian sausage instead of hot, mild chili beans instead of hot and 2 cans of kidney beans instead of 1. I added Italian seasoning to taste. I also used a pizza/Italian blend of cheese, rather than plain mozzarella. :) Everyone loved it!!

@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2022-09-27
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
OlivePaw
I was very excited about this recipient and it didn’t disappoint. I did make a few changes based on the reviews. I had doubled the recipe but didn't double the ground beef and it was still a meaty chili. I found mini pepperoni slices which didn't require cutting and I heated them up in a paper towel lined pie plate and blotted off the excess grease. I also cooked it in a crock pot and added a layer of mozzarella cheese on top to melt and become ooey gooey cheesy goodness. Very good chili I will definitely make again.
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2017-03-09
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
PurpleCloud
I made this for the chili cook-off at work and it won first place! I bought an 8 oz. hunk of pepperoni from the deli and diced it up. Much preferred the texture of cubed pepperoni in place of slices. I did not find this chili to be overly greasy at all and did not precook the pepperoni or drain the sausage. I think the bit of grease in the pan is a big part of the flavor as everything cooks together. Made it on a Sunday and stuck it in the fridge for two days to let the flavors meld. I heated it back up in a crock pot on high for 3 hours. I added generous amounts of black pepper for extra flavor and spice. Topped it with mozzarella. Definitely a winner!
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Rating
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Review
2019-11-11
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Person
BlueGoggles
I doubled the recipe to have enough for the family and a pitch-in at work. I used regular Italian sausage, rather than hot, as I didn't want it to be too spicy. It was pretty thick, so I thinned it with a small can of tomato paste, plus 3 cans of water. And a small can of low sodium V8 juice. And a can of hot diced tomatoes. It was pretty perfect then - not at all soupy. The family and coworkers all enjoyed it. I'll definitely make this recipe again.

I made this chili for a contest and won 3rd place. I did make a few changes based on the reviews. I had doubled the recipe but didn't double the ground beef and it was still a meaty chili.
