This was delicious! Tasted like the vibrant hybrid offspring of a good pizza and a basic savory bread pudding. Made almost exactly as per recipe - my only changes were cubing the bread early in the day and leaving it out to go a little stale, and adding (to the sausage, while browning) a tiny amount of finely diced mushrooms I needed to use up. I wouldn't necessarily change a thing - though this is a recipe you COULD spin in other directions easily, and it would likely still be delicious. Maybe a Tex-Mex version, changing only the seasonings? And I wonder if a lighter version using half and half or whole milk would still be good; if I could lighten it up a bit I'd be more inclined to cook this often. In any case, as-is, it's VERY tasty and my family loved it. I\u2019m so happy to see this recipe posted once again. I\u2019ve made it countless times for gatherings with family, friends and coworkers, and it\u2019s probably my most often requested recipe. I always keep copies on hand because I know someone will ask whenever I serve it. When measuring the brown sugar, just spoon it into the measuring cup - don\u2019t press it in- to keep from overdoing the sweetness.
